In order to better understand this letter, readers should know the background of writing this letter and who is Ren An. Ren An was a good friend of Sima and a military officer in Han Dynasty. Ren wrote a letter to Sima to suggest that he should recommend the competent to the Emperor Wu. But because of Sima Qian’s torturous experience, Sima did not reply Ren’s letter in time. Later, Ren was involved in the Case of Witchcraft unfortunately, which was a political intrigue that some treacherous officials designed to make Emperor Wu believe the crown prince Liu Ju was ready to revolt. The result was that the crown prince Liu Ju was killed. Later when the Emperor Wu realized that he was wrong, he blamed Ren An for not helping the crown prince. Therefore, Ren was sentenced to death for this incident. Sima Qian was in agony when he heard the news. Sima was afraid that Ren would no longer read his letter, which would make Sima regret for life. So Sima wrote a long letter to Ren An to explain the reason of his late reply and tell Ren about his experience and thoughts.
There are four parts in this famous letter. The first part introduces the reasons for his late reply and asks for Ren’s forgiveness.
The second part of the letter is to explain the reason why he did not adopt Ren An’s suggestions. Sima told Ren about his sufferings and the reason why he did not commit suicide, expressing his disappointment and determination. Sima Qian was executed the extreme penalty castration because of the Li Ling affair. Li Ling was a military officer in Han Dynasty. Li was such a brave officer that he applied for leading a small group of soldiers to attract the attention of Xiongnu which was a minority ethnic gourp in the north. Unfortunately, Li was defeated and captivated by Xiongnu. The Emperor Wu was furious because he thought that Li had surrendered to Xiongnu. Other government officials also denounced Li Ling. Even though Sima was not a friend of Li, Sima defended for Li because he thought Li was a respectable officer. Sima’s words infuriated the Emperor Wu. As a result, Sima was sentenced to castration only by defending for Li Ling. Although Sima Qian was disgraced and insulted by the cruel penalty, he would not choose to end his life by himself. Sima realized that his death did not have significant influence on the Han Dynasty and the history. What’s more, later generations might think that Sima commit suicide because of his being guilty. Therefore, his instant death was meaningless. And throughout the history, many celebrities had been humiliated for many reasons. But those great people had great perseverance to live and pursue their career persistently. Most of them achieved their goals and had influence on their countries. These people were Sima’s role models and Sima had made the determination to learn from them.
In the third part, Sima Qian further illustrated the reason he struggled to live was that he wanted to finish his work Shi Ji which is also called the Historical Records. According to the book Fifty Key Thinkers on History, “Sima grew up in a family atmosphere strongly infused with Confucianism, and Sima always regarded his historical work as an act of Confucian filial piety to his beloved father.”(Marnie ,2000) Sima’s behavior was influenced by his family and it was his family’s dream to write historical books. Also, Sima Qian introduced the style and purpose of Shi Ji. It was written that Sima Qian collected historical facts or stories and research the authenticity. With the purpose of studying the relationship between phenomena and human society, Sima Qian recorded historical people and events from the age of Yellow Emperor to the age that Sima lived in the masterpiece Shi Ji. There are 130 chapters in total.
The last part is the ending part. Sima Qian explained again about that his not recommending the competent suggested by Ren An in Ren’s last letter and consoled Ren.
Why The Letter to Ren An remains an important article in China? One reason is that Shi Ji is such an influential masterpiece in Chinese history and Sima Qian is a respectable historian. Another reason is that the letter conveys the traditional Chinese view of life and death. There is a very famous saying in this work “People are destined to death. But the meaning of death is different. People should die for noble career rather than commit suicide easily.” This great thought later encouraged many people choose to live with perseverance when they are in adversity.
