The film is mainly about a free man named Solomon Northup who used to be a violinist living a happy life with his wife and children, suddenly kidnapped by two people, Brown and Hamilton, by cheating him to make a fortune in Washington as a musician. Northup was poisoned and imprisoned, and then sold to the plantation in New Orleans. He lost his identity as a freeman and worked as a slave in the farm day by day until 12 years later, he was rescued by a Canadian construction, whose letter was sent to Northup’s friend. Eventually Northup had a reunion with his families.
Watching the film is not a pleasant experience, as it shows too much cruelty of the slave owners and the despair of slaves. It cannot be worse to think of that is the truth in history, when some people were treated as lifeless items. When Northup wanted to disobey, he was punished by being hanging on the tree from daytime till evening. The sad irony is that no one cared about him except only one slave offered him some water to drink. When the punishment finally ended, he dropped like a heavy sandbag. It is such a concise and powerful shot that impressed the audience greatly. And the climax of the film is that the female slave Patsey was nearly beaten to death naked due to getting a soap to wash her body. It showed a striking contrast between the insignificance of life and the excuse of soap, reflecting that the slaves’ life is unimportant and meaningless to the slave owners.
The most unique and successful technique of the film is the accurate and authentic way in describing the whole story. Audience can be easily taken in the film as the role of slaves and audience can share the pain and despair of those who were suffered. No overstating acting or dramatic plots, the film presented the state of slaves according to the details in Northup’s book. "In the last analysis, [the] narrative deserves to be believed, not simply because [Northup] seems to be talking reasonably, not merely because he adorns his tale with compelling and persuasive details. At every point where materials exist for checking his account, it can be verified." (Northup, Soloman; 10, 11) The authenticity and accurate acting add radiance to this film. If not freed, the destiny of slaves is tortured to death.
Clearly it is an anti-slavery film, but it does not only remind me of the discrimination against African Americans, but also other kinds of discrimination nowadays. Since the Emancipation Proclamation was released by President Abraham Lincoln, African Americans have got rid of the fate of slaves, while the segregation policy still existed for nearly one hundred years. Until Civil Rights Movement during 1950s to 1960s, African Americans gained the right to live freely and independently with their white counterparts. It is crystal clear that freedom and fairness can only be fought for instead of granted with. As an Asian student studying in the US, I typically sensed the discrimination against Asians. Sometimes I can feel the invisible prejudice from other people, not particular against me, but against the identity as an Asian. This is because Asians have never truly fought for their rights in American history, and their complacency of living their own happy life, without caring about the national policy or the other peoples’ loss, is easily attacked and criticized. In my opinion, this is due to the different education mode, as Asians are taught to be obedient and indifferent. During my stay in the US, I am so impressed by the valor of the African Americans in seeking freedom and happiness; sometimes the documents of Civil Rights Movement can move me to tears. Their fighting was not an inclination of provoking violence, but rather a non-violence activity; eventually they won the support and respect worldwide. This is the most important lesson of my study in the US, which is to use the correct way to protect our rights from being encroached.
In conclusion, I highly recommend this film as it does not only review the torture that the black slaves used to suffer, but also remind us the difficulty and necessity in seeking justice, freedom and happiness. When a person, a group or a nation is under oppressed, they should stand to fight against the miserable fate in order to guarantee their rights, otherwise they will be humiliated and bullied forever. Of course, the way to do it should be reconsidered, which needs a lot of intelligence and wisdom.
