The above three female figures are all meddling with politics, however, each of whom produces different impacts, some positive, and some negative. But there is one similarity is shared by all three: they are all impacting politics out of their personal true emotions regardless of the external environment.
First and foremost, Venus, Aeneas's mother, utilizes every resource possible to help Aeneas's to achieve his fate, is a strong example that female figures do not hinder politics. What she has done for her son Aeneas is remarkably praise worthy. She is everything opposite of negativity in the politics. She first begs to Jupiter that her son will be spared from the war. She also advises Aeneas not to kill Helen for she is not the cause for the Trojan war; the war is started by the gods actually (Book I). These behaviors indicate that she is a visionary mother who not only truly cares about her son's fate, but also wise enough to guide her son onto the right path. And then she pleads with Neptune to protect Aeneas reach Italy without harm, which Neptune agrees while demanding one life as a sacrifice for the rest of Aeneas's men. In doing so Venus becomes the protector of Aeneas when he is on his path to fulfill his density. She sends Cupid to make Dido fall for Aeneas just so he can be free of harm in Carthage (Book IV), which shows her careful consideration and always on the look out for Aeneas because she knew that Carthage is Juno's favorite city which she may use against Aeneas's well-being. She does all such things out of her pure maternal love for her son. All she wanted was him to fulfill his destiny to build an empire in Italy, and not to suffer too much on his way to accomplish this.
Second, Juno, the Goddess who tries everything to interfere with Aeneas's fate just because she personally hates the Trojans. She is resentful, vengeful, and wants to completely destroy Aeneas's journey for they are the survivors of the Trojan war. She also hates Aeneas's fate that he will destroy her favorite city, Carthage. She took several revenges to Aeneas's fleet by first asking the King of Winds, Aeolus to release the winds so that the storm will overthrow them (Book I). Her first attack on Aeneas and his fellow Trojans is already lethal. It just shows how strong her personal hatred against them actually is. Then, while in the Sicilian coast on the ninth day of Aeneas's father Anchises's death one year anniversary, Juno sent Iris her messenger to incite the Trojan women who eventually burnt the fleets. By this action, she is very eager to completely eliminate the possibility that Aeneas and his fellow Trojans can leave the shore again. This move is somehow very smart of her because without the fleets, they will be stuck on the shore forever. This can end up as a final blow to the politics in The Aeneid. When Juno sees Dido's love for Aeneas as a way to keep him from going to Italy. So she created the opportunity for the two to spend private time together in a cave during a storm (Book IV). Her personal feelings of hatred for the Trojans led her to constantly throwing Aeneas off his course to his destiny. Therefore, Juno's meddling does produce a negative impact on politics.
Third, Dido, the woman who has a distracting role in Aenea's fulfillment of his destiny. In Book IV, Dido is the beautiful queen of Carthage, the powerful city. With her strong and unwavering love for her murdered husband Sychaeus, she is very determined and focused on her political responsibilities of running the Carthage. However, after she met and fell for Aeneas, she becomes a victim. In her relationship with Aeneas, she compromises her love for her ex-husband, loses the support of her citizens, alienates the local African leaders who used to be her suitors but now her rivals. The worst thing that happened to her was the ideological differences about their relationships between Aeneas and herself. She considers them to be married after their sexual encounter in the cave, but he considers them only to be a couple in love. When he left her to fulfill his fate, though "not his free will," he still considers him leaving as an abandonment of relationship. But she sees it as the breaking of a marriage. Therefore her death does not change anything about Aeneas but has a huge impact for her once powerful city. This selfish behavior of hers makes her an irresponsible character. She already abandons her construction of the city while with Aeneas, and now that he has left, she just forgets about all her commitments to her city. This becomes the worst case of female figure's negative impact on politics due to personal emotions.
One might argue that though Venus tried everything to protect and assist her son in his long wanderings, she still forms one element of negativity in politics because if it were not for her bribery of the beautiful Helen to Trojan prince Paris, the Trojan war would have not come into being, therefore her son Aeneas will not have all these suffering to begin with. It is true in that Venus is the part of the reason why the Trojan war is started, however, it is not her idea for the Trojan prince Paris to forcibly take Helen away from her original husband. She has not explicitly supported Paris to do so. In Venus's defense, to start the Trojan war was never her intention. All she wanted was to simply win the beauty contest. To accuse her of leaving negative impacts on politics is the same as creating something that has never existed. Venus should not take the blame for starting the Trojan war and causing her son's suffering. Instead, she should be praised for her relentless efforts in assisting Aeneas in his realization of his fate. She is just a loving mother who simply wants to spare her son of hurt and suffering in this case.
In conclusion, major female figures in The Aeneid including Venus, Juno, and Dido do not completely impose negative impacts on politics. Their impacts on politics can be positive such as Venus's pleading with Jupiter to protect Aeneas. But their motives all come from their personal emotions - Venus's maternal love, Juno's resent and hatred, and Dido's romantic love of Aeneas. Their actions of meddling with Aeneas's path speak their emotions. It is only understandable and relatable to people in the modern society. People act out of their own will, thoughts and emotions. And due to people's actions, events occur, results change, and the society progresses itself. It is very difficult to judge whether a person's actions positively or negatively impacts certain things because it is all about trends and subjectivity. In the book of The Aeneid, politics is the subject of discussion, meaning the civic responsibilities, or the leadership commitment of the protagonists. But in reality, everything has two sides. Therefore everything can be viewed as beneficial or harmful by different people at the same time. The same goes with impacts. One person's actions can be viewed as a positive impact on certain things. But it can also be viewed as a negative impact on other things. Faced with such dilemmas in our daily life, we should apply critical thinking in determining what type of life and society we want to achieve, before applying personal emotions in our decision making. In other words, we should be responsible for our own actions for they leave impacts on the world we live in. Unlike the female figures in The Aeneid who acts completely out of their personal feelings, we are supposed to apply critical thinking in making important decisions and actions in our life.
