Interestingly, the classic England epic has no connection with UK from the point of historical background, geography and the main characters. The poem hero Beowulf was from Sweden, accomplished his feats in Denmark. The film “Beowulf” I selected is 2005 edition, Warner Bros. Pictures Company, ImageMovers, Paramount Pictures and Shangri-La Entertainment presented. The poem is consist of two parts, some plots haven’t logic interpretation. But after the talented screenwriters, Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary’s adaption, the illogical plots make sense. In the poem, Geats Prince of southern Sweden, Beowulf, visited King Hrothgar with his retainers, when he heard Grendel’s devilry, he would help. In film, the Danish King couldn’t bear Grendel’s long harassment, he offered rewards of gold, wealth, titles etc., so Geats Prince crossed the sea. The plot in poem with contingency, but subjectivity in film. Another adaption in film is Beowulf didn’t kill Grendel’s mother, the succubae in swamp, but induced by her beauty, treasure, title (He took Hrothgar’s crown, became King of Denmark. The succubae assured him of his land safe.) etc.. The fire dragon he killed at the expense of his life, was son of him and the succubae. In poem, there weren’t such plots. Beowulf killed Grendel’s mother, returned his homeland, made King by civilians and killed fire dragon in his old age. Because of poem writer’s Christian backgroud, something perhaps was hidden or lost at all, the modern work supplemented it, it couldn’t restore the myth but give a logic interpretation.
All the actors and actresses had brilliant performance in the film. Ray Winstone acted as Beowulf who was nearly two meters tall Vikings. Before he engaged in actor, he was an athlete to box on behalf of the British in the competition. In stature and movement, he has the advantage of playing the warrior role in the film. His acting is beyond doubt. For exmaple, he was pulled to the seabed by a sea monster, it changed to a female with long, black hairs, long tail, so Beowulf’s dagger fell down (forgot to kill), his eyes became blurred; when he returned with Grendel’s head, not the succubae’s head, he lied. Many Danes (King Hrothgar, Queen Wealhtheow, courtiers) questioned him, “Have you really killed her?” He hesitated etc..
The performance of an actor is not limited to body size, movement, expression, and more importantly - language. There are some splendid dialogues, for example:
Beowulf (Before fighting with Grendel): Tonight will be different! I am the ripper, the terror, the slasher. I am the teeth in the darkness! The talons in the night! My name is strength! And lust! And power! I AM BEOWULF!
Grendel's Mother (When induced Beowulf): Are you the one they call Beowulf? Such a strong man you are. A man like you could own the greatest tale ever sung. Beowulf... Stay with me. Give me a son, and I shall make you the greatest king that ever lived. This... I swear...
The music of the film by Alan Silvestri is wonderful. When Beowulf in the dinner at night, Queen Wealhtheow (by Robin Wright Penn) sang “Gently as she goes”; before going to sleep, upon request of Beowulf, she sang another song “A Hero Comes Home” (Singer: Idina Menzel). Within a short plot, the two songs distinct in styles appeared. The former conveyed beauty’s gentle temperament:
lips, ripe as the berries in June
Red the rose, red the rose
Skin, pale as the light of the moon
Gently as she goes
The latter was grand and magnificent, suitable for the hero, and it appeared again at the end of film after hero died, foil of hero’s death:
Out of the mist of history he'll come again Sailing on ships across the sea to a wounded nation Signs of a savior, fire on the water It's what we prayed for, one of our own Just wait though wide he may roam Always a hero comes home.
As of non-vocal, Instrumental accompaniment is simple and clear – for example, when hero crossed the sea.Special effects of the film by Gentle Giant Studios Inc., Sony Pictures Imageworks and W.M. Creations are amazing too. The film uses the motion capture. EOG and other high-tech series of new imaging technology, to create a realistic and effective CG screen effect. For example, Grendel ate humans in the dinner, the giant figure compared with normal humans, the ugly appearance, the bloody limbs; after Hero’s hitting, Grendel became smaller and smaller, ended up in a ball; the succubae (by Angelina Jolie) slowly rose from the swamp; the fire dragon with fire throat; fire dragon’s heart burned hero’s arm; the dead dragon in tide, the tide receded, it returned to a young male human etc.. The special effects and set design impressed the audience deeply.
The poem was born in the century when the British society transited from clan society to feudal society and Christianity had been introduced to the British. The poem embodies the tribal people's ideals in the clan society dissolution stage - selfless, with a high sense of responsibility, tribal nobility not divorced from the people, strength, courage, loyalty, generosity, hospitality and strong sense of honor; at the same time it also reflects the Christian value – Grendel is the offspring of Cain. He and his succubae mother stands for evils, the fire dragon in the church fable is the symbol of Satan. Beowulf defeated them that indicated the good defeated evils, Jesus Christ defeated Satan.
