Latvia is a European country with a long history and civilization. It is located in the western part of the East European Plain and on the east of the Baltic Sea. So it is usually called one of the Baltic countries. Latvia borders on Russia, Estonia, Belarus and Lithuania. According to the census in July 2015, the population of Latvia is about 2million. 61.1% of the total population is Latvian, making Latvian the largest ethnic group in the country. The second and third largest ethnic group of Latvia is Russian and Belarusian. Latvia’s population growth rate is -1.06%, indicating that young couples in Latvia nowadays are unwilling to give birth to many children. And another important symbol of Latvia’s population is the unbalanced sex ratio. The sex ratio of male and female is 0.85 in terms of the total population, which means that female population makes up about 54% of the total population in Latvia, making it one of the countries with the greatest unbalanced sex ratio in the world. Now the official name of Latvia is the Republic of Latvia. Latvia was one of the Soviet Union countries. It gained independence in 1991 and joined the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in 2004. And it is now a parliamentary democracy country.
The capital city of Latvia is thought to be the origin of Christmas tree. Now the Christmas tree is regarded as happiness and family reunion during Christmas season. Most people think that the Christmas tree was originated from Germany in the 18th century. But “the location of this first recorded evergreen tree being used in the New Year (Christmas) celebration was in Town Hall Square in Riga”. Even today, the Latvian people still regard their families and houses as the priority of their life and they will only invite close friends and relatives to their houses.
And women play a particularly important role in Latvian society. Among the family, women gather the family together, passing the family tradition. Women in society serve as leaders in many fields. The male in Latvia respect female and think Latvian women are not only smart, compassionate, but also very beautiful.
Since ancient times, Latvia enjoyed delicious food and wine on festivals. But even in an ordinary day, a gourmet meal is also very important for the Latvian people. Traditional Latvian cuisine includes a variety of foods such as: brown bread, potatoes, sausage, meat, fish, a variety of dairy products, beer and a kind of beer called kvass. Breakfast is usually served with cheese or sausage sandwich with tea or coffee. Lunch usually includes soup with vegetables and meat, as well as potatoes, a glass of what they called "kefīrs" condensed milk or juice. Occasionally lunch is made up of rice, buckwheat or pasta with meat. Latvians are particularly interested in traditional brown bread, even though the "sweet and sour" black bread is very popular, but the home-made brown bread is welcomed by almost everyone. But Latvian food is a little greasy for some people.
The seasonal traditions are usually Latvia’s festivals such as Māras Day and Jāņi. These festivals originated from countryside and reflect on the farmers’ work and people love of the land. Nevertheless, over the centuries these traditions have established themselves in cities and adapt to the characteristics of urban life. As a result, Latvia ancient seasonal traditions not only remain popular today, it has become an integral part of contemporary Latvian society.
