The magical power of being able to transform a person’s appearance utilizing makeup has been a personal passion of mine for as long as I can remember. We all have something in our lives that we remember with perfect clarity the first time we discovered it. A game you loved to play or an object that you would never be seen without' For me it was cosmetics.

I have been fascinated it since I was a little girl. I think that I have to credit my passion partially to my mother. When I was four or five my mom began to work the 3-11 shift at a factory. Not knowing how to tell time, I came to associate the start of the “Barney Show” with her getting ready for work. Whenever I heard the introduction song, I would get excited and head to my mothers room, waiting with anticipation, to watch her get ready.

A couple of days earlier she had just given me a fabulous shiny red and white stripped make up bag, that never left my side. As she walked toward the restroom I would get butterflies in my stomach. As my mother pulled out her makeup bag from under the sink, I started to un-zip mine. She pulled out each item and set them on the counter as did I. I can remember clearly how she would put the different applicator brushes, eyes shadows, and face powders in their own little groups. I mimicked everything that she did, I would imitate with empty compact powders, lip gloss and make-believe strokes of mascara. It wasn’t until the seventh grade that I first got to experience the joy of makeup for myself.

My first makeup product was lipstick. I remember going to the grocery store with my mother and walking passed the makeup section, but this time my mom walked towards the makeup aisle and said, “You have until I’m at the checkout stand to choose a lipstick, and nothing that you know I wouldn’t like”. I was so excited that it actually took the whole time to actually pick one. It had to be the right color and as any girl can tell you that is a hard thing to choose especially if it is your first time picking one by yourself.

As time went on I was allowed to add a few makeup items at a time. When I was in eighth grade, my mother took me to a makeup artist at one of those stations in the big department stores. It was called “Clinique”, known for its wide selections and variety in make up. She had them give me a professional lesson in makeup, and also bought me my very first make up kit that had everything that I had longed for. When it was time for the lesson I felt like I was back on my mother’s bed watching her. I was super attentive and even asked all types of question.

For the first couple of years I would spend around thirty to forty-five minutes trying to get my make up just right. If there was just one flaw I would take off all my makeup and start over. Everything had to be perfect. During this time, my favorite cosmetic product was a tiny jar that contained liquid eyeliner. All a person had to do was draw a straight line. This was easy enough, or so I thought! Eyeliner was the one item that that I always struggled with Applying. I would get one eye done and have it looking good and then I would try and get my other eye to look like the first one. Unfortunately, one was thicker, longer, or just dramatically different. After practicing during all of my Junior High School years and the beginning of my High School years I can now say that I have mastered the art of eye liner.

Recently, my Grandmother had her 80th Birthday Celebration and considering getting her make up done professionally. I was not about to have my Grandmother pay around sixty dollars to someone do her makeup. I told her that I would do her makeup for her if she’d like. I was flattered when she accepted. I always wanted to do someone else’s makeup. In addition, I knew that I could do as good a job as she was going to receive if she paid for it. She was a perfect subject, she never moved and I don’t recall seeing her blink. In the end I felt that I made her look ten years younger. She liked it and I was proud when she told everyone that I was responsible for how great she looked.

A self taught artist, I can confidently say that to this day I still get butterflies in my stomach every time I apply makeup and I love it. I know that my fascination and love of cosmetics will never change. There is truly something magical about the way that you can completely change a person’s appearance with make up. It is a sad but true fact that most of the world is impressed by what they see. I have just taken that fact and turned it into a passion that allows me to create an appearance on the outside that is as beautiful as I am striving to be on the inside.-H
