The story is written in a humorous style, from the perspective of a child. Such colloquial narrative style reminds me of The Catcher in the Rye, readers can be very easy to understand the author’s idea. I was captured by the author for his frankness by the first line of the book, “I was born with water on the brain.” (Alexie; 1)What is worse, Arnold had 42 teeth, eye diseases, and extraordinary big feet. From a poor family, he was so passionate for drawing, and the cartoon illustrations add so much fun to the book. A boy of drawing genius, one day threw a book at his teacher out of anger. While the teacher told him “to find more and more hope the farther and farther you walk away from this sad, sad, sad reservation”(Alexie; 34), then Arnold decided to go to Reardan School, only to find his white counterparts were so smart and strong. The everyday life of the Caucasian kids is a great adventure to him, and he has to try hard to be a part of the new environment, although he was bullied, mocked by others. But Arnold showed an admirable optimism to the unknown and difficulty. At the end of the story, when Arnold returned from his sister’s funeral, all of his classmates and teachers comforted him by hugging and slapping back, he was so moved and realized that those who had looked down on him came to accept him as a member.
And the wit of the book reviews the irony of racism and social isolation. In history, Indians were marginalized for centuries after the Protestants occupied the America. In the modern society, American Indians are still regarded as a symbol of ignorance and poverty, suffering from racial discrimination. In a society that Protestants are culturally privileged, the Indians have to fight for their rights unremittingly to find their social identity. The author does not only portray a boy of ceaseless self-improvement, but also a dream of the mutual understanding of different races.
