Because the story of Harry Potter tells readers how to reduce prejudice, thus, it is totally worthwhile to be a historical event to explore in the history of the U.S. There are different researches studying about the intrinsic meaning of the story of Harry Potter, some of them are focusing on the greatest magic of this story, which is reducing prejudice.
The main reasoning why we say the greatest magic of Harry Potter is to reduce prejudice is because some scholars have proved that through reading the best-selling books of Harry Potter improves attitudes toward stigmatized groups, such as immigrants, homosexuals, and refugees (Vezzali, 2015). This is an essential point to the society of the United States. As we all know, the United States is a country with diverse groups of people, including African American, Asia, Latino, and Native Americans. For a long time, the prejudice among different racial groups is the most significant social problems for the United States. Many scholars and professors have contributed to the study of how to reduce the prejudice. The problem is still serious, even a lot of efforts have been tried. Thus, the utilization of the story of Harry Potter is an opportunity for us to deal with this problem through a different perspective. The reason why we use the story of Harry Potter is because there is no doubt that the novels of Harry Potter, by the author J. K. Rowling, have been among the greatest success is the history of literature and cinema industry (Vezzali, 2015). From June 1997, when the first book was published, until June 2011, the series of books, translated in 67 languages, had sold about 450 million copies worldwide and is the best-selling book series of all times (Wikipedia, 2014). Based on this situation, some researchers and scholars have proved that, such as this kind of famous novels, could contribute to obtain a positive social impact. Other scholars and researchers also appeal that the novel of Harry Potter can be a great advocate for different groups of people, such as children, senior people, and people with diverse professions. Just because this characteristic of the story of Harry Potter, it is a good example for it being used as opportunity to reduce the social prejudice.
Based on this proposal, we have searched several studies that were focusing on the utilization of the story of Harry Potter using as an opportunity to reduce the prejudice. For example, Vessali (2015) have asked several participants from different social backgrounds to read the story of Harry Potter together. The previous thing is all of those participants have never read about Harry Potter. The method of this research is to apply before and after test.
3 Research Agenda
During this research, the first thing we need to do collect the resources. Those resources have various types. For example, we can collect information from journal articles, newspapers, and even TV programs. The resources the research will need are collected, and some of those are listed below. Those three papers are from journals, and all of those journals are high peered reviewing. I am also going to collect information from other sites such as newspapers and TV programs. All of worthwhile information would be utilized by our studies.
After collecting resources, I am going to integrate and summarize the current research situation about the story of Harry Potter. I am going to list the contemporary research phenomenon and future trends of this research. The core of the study is to find the way that how can we use the story of Harry Potter to help diverse groups of people to reduce their prejudice. There are various methods, we need to integrate and summarize from those methods and find out he best suited one for our study.
Then, I am going to select a specific group of people. For example, we might know the African American and Asian Americans are two groups who always receive prejudice from other developed countries. Thus, I would select Asian Americans as the study participants. Let them read the story of Harry Potter together with people from other places. My basic study plan is to use before and after data to compare the result.
