It seems that Jacob takes AI as the first step of transforming the era of social media into interactive and dynamic generation.
As far as I am concerned, benefits brought about by artificial intelligence are actually far more than what Jacob mentioned. They have produced considerable advantages in different aspects like daily life and work.
In the first place, AI application can effectively improve life quality and raise efficiency for the reason that one of AI outcomes——robot can function as a “Doppelganger” assisting its owner to do some chores in daily life, which means a great deal of time can be saved to increase life efficiency. For example, many people with advanced ideas prefer to purchase clean robot who can share household work so that users can put more energies on work or other affairs (Gupta, 2010). As a result, robot can be deeply applied in daily life and become more practical and useful for real men. Besides, a robot with adequate information can provide needed data or materials at any time, serving as an encyclopedia in a family. When the user needs to seek or check a piece of information, the robot can serve as a data source or, to some degree, a search engine. Therefore, if people encounter thorny problems, they can resort to robots to resolve those complications, reflecting the importance of AI to people’ s daily life. In this terms, robot can play a role as a guide for human beings to help them lead a scientific and smart life.
In addition to the function in daily life, another merit of AI is reducing costs, which has been mentioned by Jacob in the above. Due to the fact that many technological companies and robot manufacturers has continually upgraded and improving their products (Clocksin, 2003), automated machines can do more in work as team members. For example, in logistics industry, automated facilities with information system has brought a great revolution to this area such as AGV (Vis, et al, 2001) by forming logistics network, reducing man-made mistakes, accelerating the whole operation and decreasing labor investment. In the process of logistics, people are likely to make mistakes in steps of packaging, distribution and information input especially in the event of emergency. AI application can effectively reduce mistakes caused by careless staff. Apart from that, automated equipment with advanced information system can make the whole supply chain more flexible and efficient through streamlining operation. AI also succeeds in recording logistics data without errors, which ensures information can be shared by all participants in the supply chain. Such use of AI can largely decrease labor costs and promote the overall productivity. Besides, some AI facilities have been applied into a decision-sciences (DS) to provide more materials for education (Santhanam & Schniederjans, 1991), which reveals that AI has participated in superior decision-making process and imposes larger effect on human development. In the future, rapid industrial progress will pose a higher demand to AI development.
Last but not least, smart robot can do dangerous tasks which are quite hard or even impossible for humans to finish such as deep-sea salvage and coaling mining. Such application can, to a large extent, protect people from extremely risky environments. They can also record and store data while they are doing work. Many studies on optimizing robots’ performance reflect the academic attention to the use of robot in work conditions (Shimon, 2007). Some situations need robots to fulfill work which men can not finish such as lifting, which has largely promoted the development of human and social development. A sensitive robot can be tremendously useful in searching if a natural disaster or man-made accident occur. As a result, the efficiency of rescue task can be considerably elevated and a lot of stranded people can be found in time. In this respect, AI can safeguard people and improve work quality with sharp edge over humans.
In conclusion, AI has generated tremendous interests for human society. Jacob believes a robot can function as its owner’ s friend who communicates with people to ease the phenomenon that current people tend to put their concentration on social media. However, the roles AI can play are more than friend because they can serve as a teacher and consultant who provide information for owners. Robot has a diversity of identities: a housekeeper who do housework, a working assistant to help managers in different sectors and a “lord” who can finish extremely difficult tasks. Obviously, AI is playing a positive role in society and such trend will last for a long time.
