In the novel Feed, we can see a very different society. The main content of the novel is about the technology and science. In that society, almost everyone has the apparatus in his brain. In this way, everyone can easily get the connection with the internet. Titus is a ordinary teenager in that society, he and his friends made some trouble in a party. The hacker attached the apparatus in their brains. So Titus and his friends suffered a lot from the disorder of the apparatus in their brains. They were taken into the hospital. In the hospital, they all went through the unhappy experiences. Later, Titus met a girl called Violet. She was very clever and tried her best to fight against the apparatus.
From the novel, we can see that the society in that society has some similarities and differences to our own society. The differences are as followings. First, the ways of the electric communication are different in the two societies. In the novel, everyone has the chip in the brain. They can easily get the connection and communicate with others in a short time. The electric communication is wonderful in that society. To some extent, people do not need to depend on the tools and materials to communicate with others. (Anderson, 21). In our society, with the development of technology, the electric communication gets the great progress. For example, people can use the telephone to talk with their friends. What’s more, people can also have the video sessions on the internet. However, people have their own minds and secret. Differing from the society in the novel, people do not have the chips in their brains, so they should rely on certain tools and equivalents to communicate with others. This is a main difference between these two society.
Secondly, the education in these two society are also very different. In the novel, people can get the direct connections with the internet. It means that everyone has the rich knowledge just like the internet. If they want to learn something, they can search for what they want to get and learn something by themselves. It is very easy and convenient. In that society, people even do not need to go to school to receive the regular education. To some extent, people have more rights to choose what they want to learn and want they want to do. (Anderson, 21).On the contrary, in our society, the on-line lesson is popular, but the regular education still occupies the most part. In our society, students should go to school to get the regular education. Students have to get together in to to the school to learn something at the same time and the same place. (Chien, 607).They should spend a long time to get the degree and go to work. However, in the novel, people can get the education without the limitation of the time and place. It is very convenient and effective.
Third, it is very different in the custom and culture between these two societies. In the real society, every country has own custom and culture. For example, in China, there are many festivals and customs, such as the spring festival, the moon-cake festival, the Tomb-sweeping Day and so on. In our society, people have the high sense of the dignity and culture. People always do something to protect the traditional cultures. However, in the novel, it is hard to keep and inherit the different cultures. Because people do have the chips in their mind, the chips can be controlled and attacked by the hackers. (Anderson, 21). In some cases, the hackers may destroy some customs and cultures. From the novel, we can see that Titus and his fiends were attached by the hackers, the chips in their minds became chaos. At that time, they lost their own thinking. Their brains are blank and they do not know how to save themselves. In our society, the customs and cultures do not only rely on the internet. There are many objections and materials which can represent the customs and the culture. (Nicholas, 2). For example, people should eat the moon-cake in the mid-autumn festival. It is obvious that the moon-cake represents the custom of that festival. So we can see that the customs and culture is more flexible in our own society.
Indeed, the two societies have something in common. In the Titus’ society and our own society, the electric technologies play the important part. People try their best to make the world become faster and better. At the same time, all of the people have to take part in the development and the change of the science and technologies. People have to experience the change of the society more or less.
We can not say which of the society is better than the other. The two societies have their own advantages and disadvantages.
In Titus society, people can experience the convenience and advantages from the high technology. Indeed, people can be more free in that society. However, they do have some disadvantages. As Titus, who is an ordinary teenager, he was suffered a lot from the disorder of the chip in his mind. He felt very terrible when he lost his own thinking of the world. In that society, people can share the convenience and advantages of the high technology, they do also not avoid getting the negative influences from the high technology.
In our own society, the development of the technology and science is limited, people depend more on the real objections and materials. However, people can keep their own thinking and inherit their own culture and custom.
In conclusion, the high technology brings great advantages to the society and people. In the future, the development of the technology and science can reach a high level, people can get more convenience from all aspects of the society. However, people also should try to keep their own thinking and protect their own culture. Only in this way, can the future be better and better.
