The background of the creation of monarchy helps us understand why the counter history would be like this and the role the Lord played in the formation of Israel. In 1 Samuel, the Israelites were defeated by the Philistines, and even the Ark of the Lord was captured. (1 Samuel 4) Samuel led the Israelites to serve the Lord and took sacrifice to the Lord, and with the help of the Lord, Philistines were temporarily subdued. Samuel remained the leader of Israel, but his son hasn’t followed his way and couldn’t satisfy the Israel. Under the pressure from all around, the Israel wanted to create a monarchy. (1 Samuel 8) It seemed that the Israel hasn’t believed in the Lord but focused on the strong leadership, which offended the Lord and left him saying “it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. ” (1 Samuel 7) That the Israelites haven’t had enough faith in the Lord becomes an important element in the Israel’s history, so as to its counter history. The kings of Israel still need to be anointed in the will of the Lord, and they must lead the Israel to serve the Lord in order to become flourishing. The Lord played an important role in the history of Israel as well as in the counter history of Israel as shown below.
If the Israelites have followed Samuel’s advice, they would have been weakened by their enemies faster. At that moment, the Israelites still haven’t rebuilt their faith in the Lord, and they just believed in the strong leadership and violence. Although the Lord has warned them that a king would take their sons and daughters, their freedom, their fields, vineyards and oliveyards, their best young men, tenth of their sheep, (1 Samuel 8) the Israelites still wanted their king to protect them. In this case, they would not be supported by the Lord, and the situation that Israelites were killed by Philistines and the ark of Lord was captured may happen again and even worse without the help of Lord. But at the same time, the secular power of the Israelites was also not strong enough to resist the invasion. Under that circumstance, the Israel was hard to maintain its status. In the history of the Israel, although Saul have made some mistakes and been disgusted by the Lord (1 Samuel 15), he still led the Israelites to fight against their enemies. In the 1 Samuel 15, it is recorded that Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against Moab, the children Ammon, Edom, Zobah, and Philistines. He vexed his enemies and took the strong man. A leader helped the Israelites formed a strong army that fought against their enemies. Although they may not be blessed and protected by the Lord, they would not been defeated deadly fast. But if they followed the advice from Samuel and haven’t created a monarchy, they may be defeated severely very soon because they were weak in fighting and they would not be blessed and protected by the angry Lord.
However, if the Israelites have followed Samuel’s advice, they would not have been trapped in so many civil wars. The main reason is that king is human being who may err, not the perfect Lord. Because the kings of Israel were also human with flaws, they may mistakenly start war against their own people out of rage, envy, greed or desire. If the Israelites followed the will of the Lord rather than follow the order by their king, they may not make big mistakes, and they may be blessed and united. However, when the kings ruled the kingdom, they may make mistakes out of their own interests. If the Israelites served the Lord sincerely and followed his will, they may unite together and fight against their enemies. But the king, who was anointed under the will of the Lord, may still want to maintain his power when he was abandoned by the Lord, and thus started the war against his fellow. The case of Saul and David is a good example. After Saul made some mistakes and was abandoned by the Lord, he became exceptionally anguish; and the extraordinary performance of David also stabbed him, so songs like “Saul has slain his thousands, David his ten thousands” made he even angrier. (1 Samuel 18) It’s hard for a king to endure the fact he has lost his power and blessings, and the power and grace would be attributed to another man. Therefore he tried to murder David, which in turn resulted in the complete defeat of the Israel and the death of Saul in the war under Mountains of Gilboa. If the Israelites haven’t created a monarchy, and they served the Lord devoutly, the servant of God would guide them to unite and fight against their enemies, and they would not have started violence against other Israelite out of their own interests, and they may reunite to fight against their enemies.
But at that time if the Israelites have adopted Samuel’s advice and haven’t created the monarchy, the flourishing image under the rule of David would not have appeared. At that time, the territory of Israel was in danger, and the Israelites needed to follow the will of God in a proper way. The Israelites need a strong leader who was both the servant of the Lord and the strong king of the Israel to help them save their glory. Such a person can not only unite the whole Israel but also guide them towards the way that the Lord has shown. Blessed and supported by the Lord, David defeated the Philistines. (2 Samuel 5) David also expanded the kingdom, because “Yahweh gave victory to David wherever he went”. (2 Samuel 8) What made David different from Samuel and Saul was that he was capable of leading the Israelites towards the path the Lord shown and expanded the kingdom of the Lord. If the Israelites have followed Samuel’s advice, they may still be trapped in the dilemma that the judge cannot lead Israelites towards the Lord and they still needed a king to protect them. But the monarchy allowed a strong Yahweh’s servant to lead the Israel to fight against their enemies under the will of the Lord, and expanded the kingdom of the Lord.
In conclusion, if Israel has adopted Samuel’s advice, they would have been weakened by their enemies faster, but there would also not be king who wanted to murder his fellow out of jealousy, and the Israel would not be as flourishing as the Israel led by David. In this process, the Lord’s will played an important role in the fate of Israel.
