Since 1516 when Thomas More finished his work Utopia, the fictional island society and the term, Utopia, have exerted their influence across generations and with the days passed by, this term has been expanded deeply to different areas in social life. It conveys the critical attitude towards the comparatively unsatisfactory society and more importantly, expresses the hope about how the world should be like. In this light, many ecologists and writers with ecological ambition have gradually realized that some of their ideals and theories can resonate with the Utopianism, thus the ecological Utopia has risen in response to their hopes for ecology as well as Utopianism. This arouses my interest.

Actually, my interest for ecological Utopia could be traced back to ecological literary works, such as The Country of the Pointed Firs, conveying some modern ecological utopian ideas. In this work, Jewett, the author for it, depicts a Utopian world distant from the industrial world and illustrates how human can relate to the nature harmoniously. Dunnet Landing, a declining far-away coastal village where the story is set, as opposed to the Western ways of life and the industrial social environment, shows how people return to their original nature and how a community back to the basics. Similarly, many ecological literary works share the same feature.

In my opinion, however, this is not all the case and the ecological Utopia can be divided into concrete ecological Utopia and abstract ecological one, these works mentioned above being the latter, which put an emphasis on constructing a back-to-origin community with a lifestyle harmonious with the nature. They value hopes over the reality. By contrast, those who value reality more always take the social resources and concrete development into account. For example, President Obama wins a lot support from ecologists and environmentalists in that he focuses on the climate change and with his administration, attributes it mainly to the human activities. And the former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton agrees with him and hopes that the electricity in this country can be more transformed into renewable resource. I believe that these green ideas in government are not new and that the ecological utopia can be where these green political ideas springs from. They have influenced both the society and the individuals. In terms of the social structure and development, more sources, not just the idle sources, would be put into the ecological and environmental field. These decisions from state can generate jobs, stimulate creativity and breed new industries and the decision-makers strive to build a Utopia for their ecological and political ends. As for the individuals in the community, they may be more ecologically conscious than before and behave themselves well. This ecological Utopia, existing both in the blueprint of the decision-makers and the daily life of the masses, best illustrates how the ecological utopian ideas effected the individual and a society and typifies the concrete ecological Utopia. The concrete ecological Utopia, Obama decisions included, can be widely applied to the social life and the development of a country. In addition, they can be deeply rooted in minds of the mass and can easily draw people’s attention to some environmental issues. In other words, they can be better socially-accepted than abstract ones.

Compared with those scenery and lifestyle depicted in literary works, the policies or some specific legal issues attract me more. I do not mean the Utopianism rooted in mythology since ancient times lost its glamour, however, in fact, they are the sources of inspiration for its concrete use and can be the theory for its use in many fields.ometimes, practically, the ecological Utopia just attempts to narrow the widening gap between the industrial lifestyle and the declining environment and the original way of living and the nature and sometimes, to simply draw attention to the environmental issues. Therefore, I believe that concrete ecological Utopia has its place in real life and if employed in a positive manner, it can push forward the frontier of the ecological theory.

When we trace back to Plato’s Republic, where the Utopia was first recorded, we can find that he rigidly divided people into four classes and hoped that the poverty could be eliminated, the social resources should distributed equally and bloody wars could be sweep away. I believe that these hopes are shared by many, but no one can firmly believe that they will come true one day. Thus, the concrete ecological utopia can be compromise for people harboring unrealistic ambition.
