Introduction
It is known that there is an inherent understanding toward the notion of hero and villain in each and every one’s mind and such an understanding from different people may vary more or less among those people. It can be easily understood that there are various different kinds of perception toward the notion of hero and villain and all of those versions can make sense as long as they have their supporting ideas. Therefore this paper will also talk about one version of the perception toward the notion of hero and villain from Pratchett Terry reflected in the novel The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, during which it will also refer to some other cultural norms that help define what a hero or a villain is for better and more convincing explanation.
Perception toward the Notion of Hero and Villain
Talking about the perception toward the notion of hero and villain, there is no doubt that some cultural norms that help define what a hero or a villain is have to be taken as references in order for better explanation. According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities, such as a war hero. Also, hero is the chief character in a book, play or movie, who is typically identified with whom the reader is expected to sympathize. Apart from the above two, hero is a person of superhuman qualities and often semi-divine origin, in particular one of those whose exploits and dealings with the gods were the subject of ancient Greek myths and legends in mythology and folklore (Paul Culliton. 2011).
From all the above definitions in Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, it can be found that hero is the one that has some unique favorable qualities as are not shared by most ordinary people so that the one can become a hero in the end. Or maybe it can be put in another way that the rationale why a hero can be regarded as a hero lies in that the hero can do something good that can not be performed by the great public so that this hero can be respected as a hero by all the ordinary people. From the perspective of Pratchett Terry, a hero does not have to be quite great and does not need to do something extremely awesome so as to be recognized as a hero. The fact is that a hero only needs to think more for others and do not tend to be too selfish under most conditions. The example of hero seen from Maurice is the kid he is with and Maurice thinks rather highly toward the behaviors of that kid. That is to say, this kid is a hero in the mind of Maurice even though he has not done something great because he is only a little kid. And the truth that a kid can be deemed as a hero can indicate that whether someone can be seen as a hero has nothing to do with his/her age. What matters as for whether someone can be a hero is whether this person’s behaviors fit for the standards of being a hero to a certain extent.
The reason why the boy can be seen as a hero will be elaborated on in the following. First and foremost comes that the kid tends not to do dishonest behaviors in his life and he has actually taken honesty as one of the most significant principles to regulate his own performance. The honesty of this boy can be indicated from his saying to Maurice what they’re doing is dishonest when Maurice decides to make a fortune through stealing from others. In the opinion of this boy, it is irrational and unethical to steal anything from others and stealing is one kind of behavior as should be forbidden. Though Maurice does not follow the boy’s suggestion and Maurice insists on stealing in the end, it can still not deny the boy’s honesty in itself. Maurice holds that stealing from a thief is not stealing and taking money from those bad people can be allowed so that Maurice will choose to steal without taking any regard of that boy’s advice.
However, what the boy thinks is that people can not take action to steal under whatever circumstances and there is no reason to steal no matter from good people or bad people. It seems that what the boy holds is kind of similar as that put forward by Dangerous Beans who has said that people should not live by trickery. It is easy to understand that there is difference between the boy’s opinion toward stealing and that of Maurice. Therefore we can have a fair knowledge that different views toward the stealing behaviors have helped separated Maurice from the boy in that the boy is a hero while Maurice is not one.
Moreover, the reason why the boy is a hero can also be indicated from the choice of the boy when a guy would like to buy Maurice from him. What happens is that the boy refuses to sell Maurice to that guy only for the sake of gaining money to deal with his personal hunger. As for the boy, Maurice has already become his friend and he can not sell his friend to a stranger in order to get money from that stranger, which is not ethical as will make him regret for the later part of his life. Even if Maurice says that the boy is stupid not to sell him as Maurice could have been back in ten minutes after he has been sold, the boy as well chooses not to sell Maurice all the same. From this, we can see that the behavior of cherishing one’s friend and never betraying is also one aspect of why this boy can be seen as a hero.
With the perception toward the notion of hero being stated at length in the above, what comes next is the perception toward the notion of villain. It is described in the free dictionary by Farlex that villain is a wicked or evil person, a scoundrel; a dramatic or fictional character who is typically at odds with the hero. And a villain is something said to be the cause of particular trouble or an evil; a peasant regarded as vile and brutish (Chris Baldick. 2008). From all these different explanations toward villain, it can be found that a villain is one that is disliked by most of the ordinary people and all the people tend to try their best to avoid their being engaged in any relationship with the villain. So we can easily imagine that a villain is the opposite of a hero and a villain is supposed to be one that has some unfavorable qualities toward human beings. In Pratchett Terry’s novel, those people that are taking money from the public is villain and the typical villain mentioned in the novel is government.
It can be easily found that the government is a villain in that Maurice has said that taking the money from the major or the city council or someone like that, namely the government money, is not a behavior of stealing. From this we can readily draw our conclusion that the government is a villain here and the government is believed to be the one that has taken money from the public so that the public has to suffer more or less from hunger or the plague. To put it into more specifically, Pratchett Terry depicts the government as a villain through the mouth of Maurice and Maurice has delivered that the government has taken advantage of its power to take money from the public only for its own benefits. As a matter of fact, what the government should do is to help protect the whole public in its own way so as to enable all its citizens to live a happy life within the society. But what the government does in Pratchett Terry’s novel is just the way around so that the government is taken as a villain.
Because the government is a villain, a sense of hatred toward the government can be obviously detected through the voice of Maurice. For example, when describing the watchmen who have got big truncheons, Maurice especially adds that they look like government and they are just like the government to bully human beings. Another example of the government’s not protecting human beings can be seen from the sentence that “the people look poor and it’s the buildings that look rich” (Pratchett Terry. 2001), from which we can easily detect the unsatisfactory sense from Maurice toward the government. It is human beings’ dislike toward the government because its having not helped protect the benefits of them that makes the government become a villain in the end.
Conclusion
To sum up, the perception toward the notion of hero and villain in Pratchett Terry’s novel is only somewhat the same as other versions as have been studied before. But that does not matter at all because Pratchett Terry has described it well vividly enough to make it convincing. There is no doubt that there will be other versions of perception toward the notion of hero and villain, which calls for further research in the future.
