Some people are strongly against the idea because it is against the Bible’s teaching that “Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter”. They believe that when doctors propose to kill an infant at birth, people are guilty to accept it and even promote such ideas. In their ideas, it equals murder and even slaughter. However, a question need to be asked regarding their point of view: does abortion under this condition really deteriorate the latter life of the possible baby? First, the fetus is of great certainty to have few chances to live when it is diagnosed with congenital disease. Birth defects can vary from heart disease to congenital anomalies of the nervous system, the kidney and so on, which are all of a high death rate. So it is the birth defects that actually pose a great threat to the normal development of an embryo. And medical researches have shown that these diseases could impede the infant’s growth severely even if the embryo develops into an infant. Moreover, it could even be dangerous for the mother not only in the process of embryonic development but also in the latter delivery. So the decision need to be taken at a family’s viewpoint rather than simply defining it as murder.
Some opposers may insist that the Bible instructs a man to treasure his life and be prepared to struggle against any difficulty in his life. So aborting the defected fetus, as they believe, deprives a fetus from becoming a human being and fight against his/her own defects and diseases. However, in my opinion, their argument ignores the Bible’s instruction of “what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot”. The fetus with birth defects actually is almost impossible to be delivered. Even it is lucky enough to be born, it still has to suffer from these fetal diseases and is impossible to enjoy the life as the Bible suggests. The infant is always under risk of death and meanwhile the fragile one has to take the pains and continuous medical treatments that even an adult cannot bear. What’s more, it is a suffering not only to the fetus, but also to the family involved. Economically speaking, the family has to pay a great deal in caring the delicate life and in latter treatments. Mentally speaking, the family could be under extreme pressure in witnessing their child suffering the pains and limitless surgeries. Thus, it is more than inhumane to insist on the birth of a life that is to suffer in the rest of his/her life.
There’s also a voice against such act by claiming that some devious people might take advantage of it for the sake of their own rights. For example, parents who are unwilling to have a baby might use it as an excuse. And when the birth of another baby might put one’s right of heritage at risk, the one might play such tricks to stop the birth of his/her competitor. However, the process of aborting a fetus with birth anomaly is more and more legalized that in many countries’ law systems, the practice requires to be evaluated and confirmed by doctors of a certain number and is practiced under strict supervision. On the contrary, it is out of a protection of the future life. More and more countries promote females to do test to know the health status of the fetus during pregnancy starting at an early time. It makes sure that the risk of birth defects could be found at an early stage that can be cured in time or no feeling is brought to the fetus if it has to be aborted. The advice on taking pregnancy tests early and at a certain frequency not only ensures the healthy development of the embryo, but also helps to give guidance to the parents in time in case of some birth defects are found. So as the regulation and test systems become more and more considerate and comprehensive, it reduces the possibility of conspiracy and also gives the parents enough time to make their final decision before it is too late.
In conclusion, I think the parents of a fetus of birth defects should be given the right to abort because the physical conditions of the embryo not allows it to grow up healthily. Yet instead, it is to take great pains and even the whole family could be buried in its sufferings. As the life quality of the fetus cannot be promised, the parents should be given the right of abortion under strict supervision of the law and the medical system. The true respect to life is an all-sided consideration to the life’s future and lives related to it.
