Italian Renaissance refers to a great movement that understand the culture of antiquity. This movement had great influences on Europe. In this movement, many aspects of the society had changed a lot. The most important thing was that the humanism had connections with other factors, such as art, trade, architecture and so on. The Renaissance was in the period from 1350 to 1550. At that time, many new ideas, new theories, and humanism had spread throughout Europe. As we can image, the Renaissance reached high point in Italy. In fact, Italy was also the center of the movement because of the prosperity of Italian cities. The movement stressed the necessary responsibilities of humans in order to improve their communities through social welfare and other methods. In this way, they could beautify their cities and devote themselves to the development of the society. With the spreading of the movement, there were many outstanding people who came from all over the Europe. They had contributed a lot in the trade, collection of the wealth, art, architecture and so on. How did trade, wealth, art, self-promotion, and religion manifest in Renaissance art, architecture and ideas? The paper will use the information from the textbook and other sources to analyze this question.
The first aspect is trade. Trade had close connections with other factors. On the one side, the trade enhanced the development of the Renaissance. On the other hand, the Renaissance promoted the development of the trade. We all know that the economy was the found mental of the culture. Trade was a good way to spread the culture. At the beginning, Italy was a ultimate place of the Renaissance. The main reason was that Italy had the wonderful economic condition. Before the movement, the new air route had opened the road to other countries in the Europe. Many Europeans participated the navigation activities. This had enhanced the development of the trade in the Europe. The trade had combined the European countries with Asian countries, America, Africa and so on. Much good culture of other countries had spread in to the Europe at that time. Then it had got the great success in the economy in the Europe. The economic growth had brought the civilizations in other aspects. The trade routes had spread the ideas of the Renaissance in to the Portugal and Scandinavia and other countries in the Europe. Later, Italy had been the center for trade and artistic in Europe for a long time, it accounted for the European discovery of the new America and the new culture had been brought to Europe. The Netherlands had extensive trade routes between Brazil, Africa, and Asia by the time of the 1500s . Later, new materials had been brought from America by Spain.
To some extent, the long-distance trade had brought the economic growth. The boom of the economy had set the base conditions for the European capitalism indirectly. (Levack)
At this time, the economic development in Europe had played an important role in stimulating the development of the art and new ideas. Indeed, trade brought many new ideas and thinking to Europe. The development of the economy had provided people the opportunity to support art and architectures. Some Italian cities, such as the Venice and Genoa, they had good locations in the Europe. They had linked the western Europe with the East. With the development of the trade, these places had soon become the bustling trading centers of Europe. Trading by ships was a popular way of trade at these places. In this way, it had brought materials to other countries. Towns which were along the sides of the trade routes had supplied the hotels and some necessary services for the businessmen and merchants. What’s more, The increase of trade led to a new kind of economy. All of these enhanced the development of the Renaissance.
The second factor is wealth. To some extent, the wealth was the result of the trade at that time. In Italian Renaissance, the trade had brought the great economic growth. This had brought much wealth to the European countries.
It was obvious that the trade made Italy become very rich. Many European people stated to do business from one country to another. Italian location was very excellent, it had located on the central Mediterranean, this had made the Italian cities locate in the good positions of the trade routes. In this way, the Italian cities had became the center of the trade and the economy. People from all over Europe came to Italy to do the business. Venice had hundreds of ships which had controlled the trade routes in the Mediterranean sea. (Boller, 2009).
The wealth of many city-states stimulated the development of the art and architectures and ideas. Rich families paid for statues, paintings, beautiful buildings, and avenues to be created. In this way, Renaissance ideas spread to the rest of Europe from the city-states of Italy. (Boller, 2009).
The third factor is art. It is also the main element in the Renaissance.
The Italian Renaissance were famous for the arts. At that time, a large numbers talent artists had been active in Italian cities during 1500 to 1600 centuries. The art was the main form of the Renaissance culture.
As for the art, we had to mention the humanists. At that time, humanists had reached a high point. They had great influences on many aspects in the Renaissance. This theory encouraged people to pay attention to the human themselves. In fact, the humanists had influenced art a lot. The Renaissance artists began to imitate the sculpture, architecture, and panting of the artists from classical Greece and Rome. The artistic accomplishments of the Renaissance attract more admiration than any of its other features. Much of the artwork of the Renaissance was sponsored by wealthy individuals, often as luxury items to display and impress guests. They were influenced by the culture of humanism, and often created realistic works; attempting to capture what the human eye actually saw. (Boller, 2009).
There were two important concepts of Renaissance Art, one was Realism. The artists tried to show the ideas and thinking in a realistic way. These ways had been regarded as the nature ways. This echoed renaissance thinking that human beings were basically good; another was Perspective which used a way to enhance the naturalism.
The fourth factor is self-promotion. In the Renaissance. The self-promotion had shown in many aspects. At that time, Italy generated the seeds of the capitalism. Many outstanding artists and writers had the sense of the self-promotion.
The thinkers advocated to approve the value of the human beings. They supported everyone have the sexual desire and the demand of the emotion. People could get the self-promotion by pursuing the happiness in life. Robelais had used this thinking in his work. To some extent, this had ruined the dictatorship of the Catholicism. People had the sense of the self-promotion. In their heart, they were not the accessories of the church. What’s more, in the Renaissance, the development of the science had also enhanced the self-promotion. At the same time, the self-promotion had enhanced the development of the whole aspects of the movement. (Boller, 2009).
The next factor is the religion manifest in Renaissance. We all know that the Catholicism was the target of the criticism. Generally speaking, the Renaissance thinkers held a religious objection original divinity higher than humanity, but humanists who respond the recovery. In fact, they held the point more than the God should not be bounded. In Augustine's book about the God and cities, he had divided them into binaries that God and mankind in the world and he had emphasized that human body would be the other form of this struggle. The church was the main connection of two cities. Religious people had shown that better world was not among the secular so that the Middle Ages people's lives could come back the dark, the church above all else in the world. In the Renaissance, the experts discovered that people were rational from the freedom of the religion. However, Renaissance was not a very thorough anti-religious movement.
The last factor is architecture. Architecture was a good cultural form in the Renaissance. At that time, the development of the architecture had reached a high level in the history of the Europe.
Italian Renaissance architects had also shown the humanism in their forms and expressions. Many theories and thinking about the Classical Roman had contributed much to Italian Renaissance architectures. Just as the expressions in the literature, the forms of the Architecture were relative to classical Rome. At that time, many artists had come in to Rome to study the knowledge about the ancient buildings. They had absorbed many essences of the characters of the buildings in Rome. Later, these characteristics had spread into Europe. So the styles of the buildings at that time had changed a lot. This was very important to the development of the architectures in Renaissance. Many typical architectural characters had added in the European architectures, such as entablatures, the columns, the arches, and so on. Some writings and works on architecture had also great influences on the architectures in Renaissance. In fact, the Renaissance architecture had combined the natural characters of the building with the harmonious elements.(Maxwell, 2013). At that time, the skills of the architectures had improved a lot. The success of the architectures in Renaissance had close connections with the skillful labors.
In conclusion, trade, wealth, art, self-promotion, architecture and religion manifest had done a lot in Renaissance art, architecture and ideas. They were all the different expressions of the Renaissance. From the descriptions of the different aspects in the Renaissance, we can see the essences of this movement and have a good understanding of this period.
