Our experience of space in film or pictorial representation is most like that of a viewer looking down from a skyscraper's observation deck, a totalizing image resembling looking from the highest point in Manhattan.

Different from hiking through the woods, moving through a densely populated city is structuring and structured by the “real systems whose existence in fact makes up the city.” Pedestrians walk in a spatialized way, using their own paths to re-create the shape of space. When hiking through the woods, we are more like walking through a given space, which is like surfing the web; but walking in a densely populated city, we are walking with others pedestrians to remake the space together with our rhythm and sense, which is like writing a poem.
