Questions

Please type out, or write the answers to the following questions, and bring them to class on Tuesday:
1.  In your own words, summarize the main idea of this speech-hint: it is more than just sugar.
In this video, Dr. C mainly introduces three research trials through analyzing the research on the claim that “sugar makes kid hyper”. Most people believe the saying that sugar makes kid hyper without providing any solid evidence. As for some research, Dr. C, step by step overthrow their reliability by pointing out other affecting issues. Therefore, it comes out that sugar is not the only reason affecting the research result. In conclusion, all things should be researched strictly through rigorous research trials.

2.  What 5 things does Dr. C show as examples of things that are bad for us at the beginning of the video? Having watched the video, why do you think he uses these things as his examples?
The 5 things Dr. C shows that have bad impacts on us are: cellphones, artificial sweeteners, eating at night, video game and reading in the dark. He chooses these five things as examples because they are so similar to the example of sugar that he is going to elaborate in the following part of the video. People are used to believing the claim that sugar makes kids hyper without strictly proving it, so do the other 5 examples. For example, rumor has been circling that cellphone may cause cancer and many people deeply believe that, while nobody has ever strictly proved that.

3.  What is an anecdote? Use a dictionary, not a translator, to look up the meaning.  Write the definition.
By definition, “anecdote” refers to “a personal account of an event”, which means that the account is not strictly based on evidence or truth, but the personal point of view.

4.  What is a placebo?
By definition, “placebo” means that “a harmless substance given to a sick person instead of medicine, without telling them it is not real. Placebos are often used in tests in which some people take real medicine and others take a placebo, so that doctors can compare the results to see if the real medicine works properly”. In conclusion, placebo is a kind of substance doctor uses to replace real medicine so as to observe patients’ response, while the patients do not know that. In the case mentioned in the video, placebo means some fake sugar given to children under the condition that they do not know so as to observe their level of being hyper.

5.  Correlation is not ____causation_________________________.

6.  What 3 types of research trials are discussed, and what is the difference between each?
Three types of research trials are Control Trial, Randomized Control Trial, and Double-Blinded Randomized Placebo Control Trial.
Control Trial is to have a study group and a control group to compare. It has the potential problems that the subjects in the different groups may already have some existing differences which will affect the result of the research.
Randomized Control Trial means that the research chooses its subjects randomly so that we can make sure that the difference in result is cause by the variable rather than the difference of the subjects in different groups. Therefore, Randomized Control Trial solves the problem caused by Control Trial. However, it ignores some emotional reason such as that the subject or observer is sensitive to the variable.
Double-Blinded Randomized Placebo Control Trial is a kind of research trial which introduces the use of placebo to avoid some emotional factors. Therefore, even the observers and subjects do not know who are really being tested. So the problem caused by Randomized Control Trial is solved.

7.  How many RCTs have there been for sugar and hyper activity?
There are twelve kinds of RTCs for sugar and hyper activity.

8.   As a college student, and researcher, what do you think this means for you?  How will this affect the sources you choose for your speeches (or papers)?
As both college student and researcher, this video enlightens me a lot because it mentions many factors I overlook during a research, such as emotional factors of the subjects or observers. It leads me to discovering more factors that will affect my research and becoming a more rigorous researcher. As for sources for my speeches and paper, I will choose those materials which have been strictly proved and have solid evidence. Claims which can be defied through some unconspicuous loophole will not be chosen either.

9.   What's something you have always heard is true, that you might like to research and find out if it really is?
I would like to do some research on the saying that “slow walk immediately after meal is good for health” and find out whether it is true.

10. Name 3 things you liked, and 3 things you disliked about this presentation.
There are three things I like about this presentation.
First, the chosen case of sugar and hyper is very typical and impressive.
Second, the logic to introduce research trial is very clear. Control trial comes first, then randomized control trial, and finally comes double-blinded randomized placebo control trial.
Third, the explanation of the research trial is concrete. Dr. C points out many influential factors that lead to unsuccessful research so that I can know more about how to conduct research.
There are three things I dislike.
First, one example maybe not enough. Perhaps one more example would be better.
Second, although the research trial has been introduced concretely through the example of sugar and hyper, the academic introduce, such as definition, advantage and disadvantage of research trial is not enough.
Third, as the video is introducing some problems related to doing research, it can introduce some books or resources for audience to further study in the final section.
