Autobiographical Research Paper Allen D. Goodsell November 29, 2009 Being I spend a lot of the year at the race tracks in Canada, and a lot of the year in Montana, U.S. I will be doing the autobiography about both places. Now since I am from Frenchtown, Montana the racial issues where slim. The high school I went to had a grand total of just over three hundred students. With that in mind, the community members there look like me. That is your typical American farm boy that loves sports, and meat and potatoes. However, we did have some people that weren’t that way. We had a few that where Native Americans, African Americans, and the foreign exchange students from Mexico, Finland, and the Czech Republic. As for the race tracks in Canada, the members of the community is a lot different. Unlike Frenchtown, where it is separated probably 90 to 10 or maybe 85 to 15, the race tracks are probably 70 to 30. Granite, there are a lot of the people who look like me, but there also is a lot that don’t. For instance we have people that are Puerto Rican American, Asian American, Cuban American, Mexican American, African American, Native Americans and Jamaican as well. Now there is a good size list that separates my looks from them. That is the typical size, body type, color, hair, and just the overall appearances. As for Frenchtown, they were very good to foreign exchange students. In a way they treated them like they were different from everyone else in the community, but in a good way. They did not single them out and be raciest to them, but welcomed their ways and wanted to learn from them. For example, the high school would have a set night during the school year set aside so that the foreign exchange students could have a concession stand. Now this concession stand wouldn’t charge for the food, but it would just have the food that the exchange students made so you could try it. As you would eat their food, they would tell you about ethnicity. Other than that, everyone else was treated fairly, as if there was no difference between each other. Now, as for the race track, it is pretty much the same. At the race track we have a bunch of leaders, with one big one at the top, the stewards. Now the jockeys have their leader, the grooms have theirs, the trainers have theirs, and the owners have theirs. Despite how some of the richer owners treat those people who don’t have their kind of money, everyone is treated the same. There is no racism going on from anyone when it comes to the leaders. Now, depending how old the members are is the differences in how everyone is treated in Frenchtown. For instance, I remember when my friend who happen to be an African American and I were at the playground as kids in the third grade. We had all different kinds of kids calling him raciest names and so on. Now that is pretty hard to believe, especial at that age. We also have the older community members, generally the ones in the 80 year old range who don’t feel so kindly about any of the no white Americans. However, the in between members treat everyone the same, especially in high school. I feel the reason is that with such a small community, everyone is part of everyone’s family. We all look out for each other, and help out if needed. This is different than what I see at the race track. Here it is a lot different, and after taking this class I have realized why. For example, the horseman and other riders had a lot of issues with the Jamaican and Barbados riders. The number one reason for this issue escalading like it did was the lack of communication and understanding of each other. We didn’t understand how they operated. For instance, how they did laundry. They wouldn’t go to laundry mates, but buckets of water and close lines. Which isn’t an issue, but while doing their laundry they would sing, and sing loud' In fact they pretty much sang while they did everything, and for those who didn’t like it, it was bad, since we all lived right next to each other in campers. There were also a lot of other things, like how they rode in races. It was an acceptable way in Jamaica, but not our style in Canada. With these, plus other things made thing very tense around. However, as the year went on and we became friends with them, learned how they did things, they learned how we did things, and a lot of patience when attempting to communicate, they became very good friends to everyone. That made a big change from us wanting them kicked off the race track, to welcoming them back next year. As for both Frenchtown and the race track, people like me get treated equally and great. That is because we are a majority, it might be a little different if we where the minority. As for the text or work manual contain information about people like me, the answer is no. Once again that is because people like me are a majority. This is with me throwing out where they state everyone is to be treated equal. However, both the texts and especially the work manuals are directed at people like me. For instance it states how people like me is suppose to treat others, respect others, and the consequences that will happen if not followed. As for the texts, it is directed at teaching people like me about everyone else, with the reason being that I need to know because in 50 years I will be the minority. The local media represents people like me, and everyone else to. As for the poor college student that has to work full time just to make ends meet while attending a college that just seems to be over priced. Or the group of people that work for minimum wage, $ 7.25, which doesn’t cover all of a person bills that includes food, gas, and heat. It also represents my group as it pertains to the group that doesn’t carry medical insurance do to the lack of money. As for if they represent people like me in a racial or ethnical way, I don’t see it. Unless maybe if you where to include them supporting avid sports fans, which in a way might pertain more towards Americans, than the others. As for the similarities between me and the leadership in the communities, there defiantly are a few. We are middle class Americans, with bettering us as a community on the mind. Once again, being it is such a small town, we think of the minorities as one of us. With that on the mind, they get represented equally. If anyone in that leadership role where to ever not represent them like everyone else, than they wouldn’t be there very much longer.
