Running head: Ethical Issues in Management Ethical Issues in Management Latangela Alexander University of Phoenix MGT 216 July 26, 2010 Selena Mason Ethical issues in management start with business ethics. There are no clear morals to guide leaders through tough dilemmas about what is right or wrong. Hiring managers must abide by laws written to protect candidates. Managers have to put away biases sides and hire the right person with the right qualifications. The hiring process is the first step in selecting human resource into an organization. Ethics play a major role during the hiring of employees. Ethics and ethical decisions are necessary to be a successful manager or supervisor. Hiring managers face moral and ethical issues, such as discrimination against race or age. If this issue arises, it can cost the company millions of dollars. An example of age discrimination is when a 50 year old male or female apply for a position and the hiring manager do not hire them because they feel a younger person can do the job better. A hiring manager may feel the applicant is not the right race for the company. That is an example of race discrimination. More companies administer a test before hiring an applicant to avoid lawsuits. If an issue occurs, they can take the test to court to back the discrimination charge. A hiring manager can work for a company that strongly believes in their religious background. An applicant that is a homosexual come and apply for the job and the hiring manager do not hire him or her because of their sexuality. It is no law that protects homosexuals of discrimination in the workplace. The relationship between social issues and ethically responsible management practices relates to a hiring manager by hiring, evaluation, performance, discipline, and termination. Managers maybe involved in any circumstance that pertains to diversity and harassment. They have to set a good example for their employees. If a hiring manager friend goes and applies for a position, it is up to the hiring manager to make an ethical decision to hire him or her. The manager should not hire him or she based on friendship, they should base it on the qualifications for the job position. Some managers surf the internet social networking sites like Face book and MySpace. They make their hiring decision from the profile and whatever else is on the page. It is a good idea to have a professional page. Some employers will hire just on the basis of the social networking site. Ethical issues such as layoffs, discrimination, and harassment are just some of the issues companies are faced with everyday. A workplace example of an ethical dilemma related to the topic is sexual harassment. A male was hired at a survey company. He worked for the company for a year. While in the break room, he made a comment directed toward a supervisor. He said, “Look like you can work for hooters.” She laughed at the comment. A couple of days later, the supervisor reported the incident to HR. She said she felt he sexually harassed her. She did not feel comfortable with the comment that was made about Hooters. We were all called in as a witness and to make a statement on what he said. The company terminated the male until further investigation. He was immediately escorted out of the door. The legal aspects management faces during the dilemma were interviewing everyone that was in the break room at the time. Then everyone that made a statement would have to go to court and that could cost the company more money. Sexual harassment is one of the leading cases that go to court. It is many forms of sexual harassment. It is up to the individual to know and read all materials regarding sexual harassment. The legalities that governed the decision were the male was terminated immediately. If he was not terminated, the supervisor could have brought a lawsuit against the company. Then again, the company could have lost money. Workplace example two: The Company takes pride in hiring minorities. A candidate fits the job requirement for the position, but has a heavy accent. It is a tough decision to make because the consumers may not understand him or her. The only legal aspect is the candidate can file discrimination against the hiring manager if not hired for their heavy accent. It is not good to judge someone if that person is from another culture. While working for an investment firm, one of the services provided was to assist investors in there investing habit. All work was performed through phone conversation. After the phone call, the representative would have to input all the information into a data base. If the input was inputted incorrectly, the investing habit could be recorded incorrectly and when a follow up call is made and wrong information is disclosed, the company could lose a client. By working with the representatives a close relationship was formed. If a mistake occurred, no matter how close the relationship is, that person still had to be coached. Everyone makes mistakes, so the first time it would be a coaching and if it continued then that person would be terminated. Being the supervisor in charge it is a duty to treat everyone the same and assign errors and provide coaching. It is unethical to treat someone different because of the personal relationship with them. Business ethics is the behavior that an organization conducts on a daily basis both towards organizational personnel and customers. Ethics programs help avoid criminal acts. Being a hiring manager is not an easy task. Business ethics has substantially improved society. Society reacted and demanded business place high value on fairness and equal rights. Every manager will have to deal with moral and ethical issues during his or her career. As a manager, a person may have to re-evaluate what he or she was taught to be moral or ethical. Making moral and ethical decisions is not for self, but for the company, the individuals who work for the company, and customers and the community. Organizations nationwide conduct daily business based upon principles and values that govern the decisions and actions of a company (L .Trevino and K. Nelson, K. Wiley, 2007).
