C.E.O. of Community South Medical Center

HCA340: Managing in Health & Human Services (BGD122A)

1. Select one of the needs of Community South Medical Center and identify at least one strength, one weakness, one opportunity, and one threat (S.W.O.T) for that need. How does each one these correlate to the overarching issues confronting Community South Medical Center'
One of the needs that Community South Medical Center has is the clinical staffing which includes registered nurses, respiratory therapist, and medical technologists. As stated in our textbook “The power of the healthcare workforce can have significant strategic implications for any healthcare organization, as the workforce is composed of the front line of caregivers in providing services (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2012). One good example that we can also consider in the power of the healthcare workforce is the potential ramifications of the current nursing and personnel shortages (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2012), with such shortages of personnel staffing may affect a hospitals ability to add beds to meet growing demands for services (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2012), because of this need, as being the C.E.O, I would have to say this is the area that needs to receive improvement.
One of the strengths that I believe would benefit is a section that is fully staffed, which would result in greater income for Community South Medical Center. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (www.ehow.com), it reports that medical facilities that fail to have adequate nursing staff tend to have higher rates of poor patient outcomes (www.ehow.com), the effects that concludes from low staffing in an organization is the quality of care that is delivered to the patients.
2. Is it time to revise the strategic mission and plan of the organization from three years ago or continue as originally planned with a yearly assessment' Should the C.E.O address the issues confronting of confronting Community South Medical Center or wait another year' If so what should the strategic plan be' If now why'
I believe that the strategic mission and plan of the organization should be revised once a year and updated as well. The strategic planning process, according to our textbook explains that it consists of two interrelated activities which are: the development of the strategic plan and execution of the organization’s strategy (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2012). The development of the plan is most often done with a multiyear time horizon (3 or 5 or 10 years), and it is updated annually (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2012). As times passes, there can be changes that can affect organizations, because of this reason it is wise to choose to revise and update the strategic mission and plan of any organization.
3. What leadership positions would be in your strategic management team' Why' What would their responsibilities be'
The leadership position that would be in my strategic management team would Workforce Planning/Recruitment. The reason I would have to choose this leadership position would be because it would be able to handle the needs in directing to analyze jobs that are needed within the HSO, which is identifying current and future staffing needs. The responsibilities of this position would be Job analysis, manpower planning, job descriptions, recruitment, selection, negotiation, and hiring, and orientation.
4. What are some of the market trends you can identify in this area' How might they affect Community South Medical Center' How would you prepare for them'
Some of the marketing trends I can identify would be Production Orientation, Sales Orientation, and Marketing Orientation.
* Production Orientation: Activities focused on achieving organizational goals through product and clinical quality.
* Sales Orientation: Activities focused on achieving organizational goals by generating volume and filling beds.
* Marketing Orientation: Activities focused on achieving organizational goals by identifying healthcare needs, creating, communicating, and delivering value.
In any healthcare organization there should be plenty of staffing, by preparing and hiring adequate staffing the patients will receive the right type of quality care they deserve.
