Civil Disobedience And America America was formed on the ideal of personal freedom and a democratic government by and for the people. The country was formed with the intent of its citizens to be able to posses the ability to address the government for grievance. Our original fathers: Adams, Jefferson, and Washington were branded as traitors when they spoke out against their native country. They were labeled as revolutionaries and renegades for something that Americans today take for granted. Those men were the first generation in a long line of brave individuals who stood up to an oppressive government that refused to work for the majority of its people. 

Our founding fathers showed us how vital and important it is to address the government that has failed its citizens. These men were the first to implement “Civil Disobedience”, which would be later coined by Henry David Thoreau. “Civil Disobedience” has become the backbone to America’s values and beliefs of freedom. From the youth protest of Vietnam and the establishment, to the emotionally driven Civil Rights movement led by the guidance of Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Anne Moody, “Civil Disobedience” has rang out clear all across our country throughout our nation’s existence in social protest. “Civil Disobedience” has been the main driving force behind all of the great movements of the last century, but lately the involvement of America’s citizens in social protest has become lax.

 Many of America’s citizens have lost the spirit that has created a better country for everyone. Most Americans have been lost in the idea of material wealth and are blinded to the things that happen everyday around them. Henry David Thoreau conforms to the concept “that a government is best which governs least” (Thoreau 481). But many believe “that government is best which governs not at all” (Thoreau 481). A government in which does not govern at all would likely be the most flexible to the people’s will. “The government itself, which is only the mode which the people have chosen to execute their will, is equally liable to be abused and perverted before the people can act through it” (Thoreau 481). If the masses were to execute all governmental abilities, the likelihood that people would never be placed into oppressive situations is much greater. Thoreau believes that government’s show us how men can be imposed on, and even oppose on themselves, for their own advantages (Thoreau 481). The majority of power awarded in America is given to the strongest and richest, not to the masses. How can a country that is supposed to be governed by the masses be so excluded by the elite' If the country were run by the masses would not the people know what would be fair and just' “The mass of men serves the state thus, not as men mainly, but as machines, with their bodies” (Thoreau 483). Many of the citizens of this country choose to ignore injustice and ride along with the lies they are fed by its government. In cases of injustice, “Civil Disobedience” is but the only way to conquer it. 

But the spirit that the people possessed just forty years ago has vanished in the possessions that have become the reason for living. “Civil Disobedience” involves the action of the people. It can never transpire unless the government’s citizens are willing to begin the movement. Action is the most specialized part of any movement that occurs. “What is the price-current of an honest man and patriot to-day' They hesitate, and regret, and sometimes they petition; but they do nothing in earnest and with effect. They will wait for others to remedy the evil, they may no longer have it to regret” (Thoreau 484). 

If a person is unwilling to show action for what he feels is right or wrong and is content with complaining, what is the point of being part of a free institution' “That he not busy being born is busy dying” (Dylan It’s…). How can a man be happy with just having an opinion only, and enjoy it (Thoreau 486)' If a person is unwilling to rise up in the face of oppression, than he or she is uncaring of the human race. “How many times can a man turn his head pretending he just doesn’t see' How many ears can one man have before he can hear people cry'” (Dylan Blowin’…). What would our country be like if it were not for the bravery of Martin Luther King Jr. and Anne Moody in the Civil Rights Movement' Those individuals took the road less traveled and used their granted rights as Americans to the fullest. The spirit of “Civil Disobedience” has been lost with the end of the Vietnam protests and Civil Rights movements of the sixties. 

A few of the best leaders during the socially explosive sixties that implemented “Civil Disobedience” were Martin Luther King Jr. and Anne Moody. Martin Luther King Jr. was the prominent leader of the Civil Rights movement and later spoke out on the injustice of the Vietnam War. Martin Luther King Jr. was faced with oppression throughout his whole life but overcame all of it by using his right to address government. Martin Luther King Jr. knew something must be done in order to overcome all that his people have endured the last two hundred years. Martin Luther King Jr. stood up in the face of adversary and took the initiative to do something to better his situation. Martin Luther King Jr. eventually paid with his life in order to stand up for what he believed in. 

Martin Luther King Jr. knew the importance of “Civil Disobedience” and social protest. He knew the time was now and the opportunity must be taken full advantage of. “Procrastination is still the thief of time” King once said and new that the people had to match their words with action (King Jr. 664). King understood how the American government felt about the protests occurring in this country and how they refused to acknowledge their peoples screams. King saw people being beaten in the streets and thrown into jail for addressing their government and believed in Kennedy’s words “that those people who make a peaceful protest impossible will make violent revolution possible” (King Jr. 663). In order for this country to change, King believed that “every man of humane convictions must decide on the protest that best suits his convictions, but we must all protest” (King Jr. 663). King saw the need to “shift from a ‘thing-oriented’ society to a ‘person-oriented’ society” (King 663). The same shift that King spoke of must be made today. The “thing oriented” society has diseased our culture since the end of the famous movements of the sixties. 

King noticed how the American government would not allow other revolutions to occur in this country and around the world. Was this not the same government that was born by the biggest revolution in the world' “The Western nations that initiated so much of the revolutionary spirit of the modern would have now become the arch anti-revolutionaries” (King Jr. 664). King feared the worst for America’s future as a free institution because of the lack of “Civil Disobedience” and saw the urgency for it. “If we do not act we shall surely be dragged down the long dark and shameful corridors of time reserved for those who possess power without compassion, might without morality, and strength without sight” (King 665). Anne Moody was a strong voice in the Civil Rights movement. She became disillusioned with her country’s government at an early age with the death of Emmett Till. Before this moving incident, Anne had no idea what was going on around her. She was completely blind to her people’s plight. “It was then that I realized I really didn’t know what was going on all around me” (Moody 112). After her rebirth, a new fear was thrown into her. “Before Emmett Till’s murder, I had known the fear of hunger, hell, and the Devil. 

But now there was new fear known to me- the fear of being killed just because I was black” (Moody 125). This fear that was now instilled in her after Emmett Till’s murder never once stopped her from disagreeing with what was going on in America. Anne now witnessed everything that was happening to blacks in Mississippi and decided that she would not stand for it any longer. Several years after Emmett Tills death Anne attended college where she found more injustices and would continue to fight them. She participated in many Civil Rights activities throughout the years. Anne was a main character in the Woolworth sit-in. She sat there for three hours being beaten and called racial expiates (Moody 267). Anne Moody stood up in the face of danger, never once lowered her head in disgrace while she was in that diner. She knew that she was accomplishing something so tremendous and she hoped that this could spark an even more all out movement of the people. Anne “Civil Disobedience” thoroughly while she was fighting for the rights of all blacks in the South. She eventually became disheartened in the movement in Mississippi because it occurred to her after watching blacks expand so much energy interacting with each other on a Saturday night. “

I had often thought that if some of that Saturday night energy was used constructively or even directed at the right objects, it would make a tremendous difference in the life of Negroes in Mississippi” (Moody 291). She faced the fact that many people were not willing to expend the energy to change for fear of losing what they already had. This continues to be a problem that plagues our country today. What happened to the wave of change that was engulfing the entire country just forty years ago' The social changes seemed endless with the guidance of Martin Luther King Jr. and Anne Moody. Somewhere along the way our country switched to the “thing-oriented” society in which King spoke about and the spirit of “Civil Disobedience” was lost along the way. “

Civil Disobedience” was indeed the main force behind the changes that Moody and King strived to gain, but the energy those individuals possessed appears to be locked up in other activities. In order for our country to gain the freedom that our founding fathers were willing to die for in creating this country, we must go back to the spirit of “Civil Disobedience”.
