There seems to be no greater example of the definition of the word inevitability than the crisis of the American Revolution. A practical, but well rounded definition found in the Webster’s New International Dictionary states, “ certain to happen; unavoidable.” Yes, I do believe the American Revolution was inevitable. After the French and Indian War, Britain lost a great amount of money, and to make up for that loss, they decided to tax the colonists. Most colonists believed that they weren't at fault for Britain’s deficit, so in a responding way they ended up rebelling. After each rebellion, England would think up a new way to tax the colonists so that they wouldn't be as mad but still able to keep a taxation. As each new tax law was invented, the colonists disliked it even more became more upset. It was becoming apparent that the relationship between America and Britain was just going to become worse.[1]

After wars, a country usually loses money, or gains it, depending if they lose or win. Britain lost and ended up paying for their deficit by applying numerous taxes towards the colonies. When British starting bringing on all of the taxations towards the colonies, it obviously became a turning point when the revolts from the colonists started. There was a time when both the British and the American colonists realized there was no trying to back out of the inevitable revolution or taking their word back on either sides and I believe the greatest point of no return was the great Battle at Saratoga. American colonies came to the new world at the beginning for a sole purpose of sense of freedom, whether it was religious or political, or in some cases both. They were able to obtain this feeling when moving from Britain to a place of their own. In this new world the colonists realized they were able to have economic liberties, free religion, and favorable politics. The colonists showed their freeness many ways. One particular way was participating in a distinguished group called the Freemasons.[2]

In the time of the revolution the Freemasons were privileged to maintain upstanding colonial members including well-known Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. Because of these men’s activeness in the organization, the group became thought to be a colonial example of independence from Great Britain during the time of the American Revolution. Bernard Fay introduced this group during the time of the revolution to the French and American colonists for the purpose of being the, “instigator of the intellectual revolution…” and “the spiritual father of its political revolutions.” These men were showing another first stands to freedom and liberty for the future complete nation. The Freemason’s thought on goals during the revolution was to come together in a brotherhood community and form leaders for their country and what all they believed in for freedom patriotically. [3]

I believe that this group gave colonists great courage and self confidence in themselves and they realized that they were very capable of forming their own government and society as to their liking. They saw that their location was far from Great Britain. They became conscious of the fact that there was no point in having the British government to keep them afloat from a far off distance. Not only were they still trying to break away from Britain, as they were in initially, but were also ready and capable of forming their own central government system. When the taxations from Britain started soiling their somewhat free domain, they become conscious that they were never truly as free as they honestly thought they were, even though they were seas apart.

After having the taste of freedom, which they had formed in the colonies, they knew they wanted more of this free living and decision makings and did not want to have anything to do with the British government policy, including the various taxation laws they were being put upon. Some people may argue a valid argument that it was the colonists’ duty to support the British for protecting the colonies during the difficult times and overall support their mother country, but being indebted to the British for protection was not what the colonies were looking for when building their country in the first place and it was obvious that British government was trying to keep a hold onto the colonies for political and economical purposes. The colonies were getting frustrated by being taxed with new taxation laws, governed by Great Britain every new year, replacing the old taxes. The taxations to the colonies might have been idealistic to the British government, for means of a way of making money off the colonists, but in the end were just not as practical as they were thought to be in the beginning. The colonists showed this feeling towards their mother country by revolting many times which soon became the ever so popular American Revolution.

Of the many wars which were fought by the American colonies, I believe the Battle of Saratoga was one of their greatest accomplishments of all time made by the colonists and their supporters. The first battle of Saratoga was fought on September 19, 1777 in which General Gates lost ground to the British when he and General Arnold differed in opinions and resulted not only in a shaky loss to Gates but also a relief of duties to Arnold. The second battle of Saratoga began on October 7 at Bemis Heights when British Major General Burgoyne took his useless and tired men to attack, as his devised plan should have went, but ended in a defeat on him by Gates and his Patriots. Arnold, back in the group then led a counterattack on Burgoyne’s army which wounded the British forces so badly that Burgoyne surrerendered days later at Saratoga ending Burgoyne‘s great attack and scheme. [4]

This battle proved to the world that the newborn American army was an effective fighting force capable of defeating the highly trained British forces in a major confrontation. As a result of this successful battle, the European powers took interest in the cause of the Americans and began to support them. Clearly with the support of not only another country but also manpower, political background, and financial aid the colonists were able to overcome the obstacles Great Britain was handing out. [5]

War continued for another seven years, knocking the British down one at a time. It was soon becoming apparent to the British that America was going to stay true to their word and fight for what they wanted, freedom. It was uncommon for the British to speak their personal opinions about their thoughts on returning back to the mother country not succeeding and by being overpowered by the colonies, but one British Marine in particular, James Wilson, member of Parliament and also a captain who served in the Seven Years War resigned his duties in 1776 instead of going on to fight with his country against the colonies. He stated he could not , “consistent with his conscience, serve in the present dispute with the Americans.” [6]

The American Revolution was a great page in history which shaped our country as it is today. This was one revolution which was certainly inevitably going to happen because of the strong willed colonists and their eagerness to become a free governing country. Colonists had long awaited the time when they could all work together, be free from religious persecutions, make a good living, and doing so all under the construction of a modern day democratic political system. With Great Britain always wanting the financial support from the colonies, as they did with the taxation laws, they were never going to be able to break away from their mother country and learn to live on their own. They showed the British that they were capable of making a living on their own and protecting themselves through the revolution. They also proved to them that they would be able to succeed on difficult tasks put before them in the future. [7]

The American Revolution was something that not only was an inevitable event waiting to happen but what it did was what paved the way for the freedoms and backbones this country has today. The colonists’ dreams came true at the end of the war when Great Britain realized there was no end to winning this battle. The colonists knew they had to win this whole revolt in the end because if they had not, they knew that America would never exist and it would have defeated the purpose of moving to the new world in the first place. Even though America and Great Britain had a bad beginning and what could be called a misunderstanding, eventually the mother country knew it was time for the children to grow up and live on their own. In time both countries were able to set their differences aside and become family again. It was the determination the colonists and leaders had which made America what it is today. -X
