America Firsthand , by Robert D. Marcus and David Burner is written in distinct detail about several accounts by American colonists that are written and relay what it was like in the colonies during the first couple decades. The accounts describe how teenagers, men, and women, all in their own way, questioned society, religion, and government in order to improve themselves and have their own effects on a changing county. The author compares and contrasts religious, political, and social issues that were dealt with during the early 1800’s. In part one the author introduces the encounters of Indians and Europeans, starting with lectures from Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci, and concluding with descriptions of the New World from the first settlers. 

This ranges from the years 1493 to times of the first settlers. Here Christopher Columbus explains to the royalty his discover in the Indies and his plans on conquering it. Part two relates the experiences in the colonies, describing the early American life with vivid examples of readings. In this chapter, the author provides the letters that John and Margaret Winthrop wrote to each other expressing their love according to the puritan life. Also one of the most amazing stories is the one of Benjamin Franklin, whose exemplary life led me to read his Autobiography later on. This part also relates the story of Olaudah Equiano when he was kidnapped to become a slave. Having gone past the American life, Marcus and Burner now gets involved with the era of revolution. In chapter three some readings about the atrocities committed in the Boston Massacre and the shay’s rebellion, made me realize why and how the revolutionist wanted out from British dominion. This is related from the point of view of Thomas Preston, who was a British officer, and George R. twelves from the Boston Gazette, showing with it both sides of the story. 

Loyalists and revolutionists describe with vivid detail the experience of the revolutionary life expressing strong opinions about their government, their society and their struggles for freedom. After all the era of revolution is described, Part four explains the points of view of Jefferson and his slave Hemings, relating what was like to live in that family and showing abysmal differences on the way they saw their life and the way they lived it. The difficulties of a nation rising arise from views of native Cherokees with their story of the Trail of tears and another trail, but not of tears, that lead Lewis and Clark through the west in their expedition. Their language and descriptions of the wild life made me feel as if I were the one going along with them in the Mississippi river. The antislavery movement goes one step further, reaching the national level and gaining new allies within the whites. 

Excellent literary excerpts rose from the slavery, like Nat Turner and Harriet Jacobs, who are included in this recompilation. Religious and cultural issues like the Seneca Falls Convention and the rising levels of alcoholism are debated by Shay Arthur with his Best-seller and Cady Stanton in her “Declaration of Sentiments”. Then the Civil War takes place in America and then it’s reconstruction, wich is presented in Part six. The readings in this section reflect the crises the nation faced at mid-century. Cornelia Hancock’s description of the battlefield and the accounts by George Wards Nichols and Pauline DeCaradeuc Heyward of the devastation wrought by William Tecumseh Shermans’s march through Georgia and the Carolinas graphically illustrate the impact of the war. Ellen Leonard’s account of the New York Antidraft riot exposes the dilemma of conflicting visions of the goals of the war. Victory for the Union did not answer all the major questions posed by the antislavery debate and the war. 

At the end of this chapter and also chapter 5 the author included a variety of illustrations of slaves and their cities in the civil war era. The authors examined the experiences of Hetty Shepard, Ben Franklin, and Eliza Pickeny. Three Americans from very different backgrounds who all had thoughts, actions, and ideas to better themselves and hopefully better their fellow man and society. They show that people should try to better themselves based on his or her own opinions and ideas rather than rely on those of others. Miss Hetty Shepard was a Puritan girl living in New England at the height of colonization and had trouble with the Indians. She recorded a diary to describe the days as they went by. Also along with her daily acknowledgements, Hetty reveals private thoughts and inquires that show her doubts and questions concerning her strict Puritan beliefs. The author shows passages from a diary written by Hetty Shepard about what some may call the rebellious mind of young woman. 

Based on her writings, others may call her the beginning of the independent, or republican, women. Men of the colonial time period did not have it much easier than women. Inventor, philosopher, printer, and ladies’ man extraordinary Ben Franklin was also considered in this book. He was a writer/printer from Philadelphia, and a person who was interested in the science of humanity. Franklin in the midst of the Age of Enlightenment was a man concerned with his own personal perfection. Eliza Pinckney, “A Republican Women”, was an extraordinary woman of the colonial south. Throughout her life she knew how to fend for herself. She was educated and cultured; she took on the responsibilities of running several plantations, as well as the responsibility of raising two children on her own through long distance correspondence. She was in every meaning of the word, independent. All three of these people, Hetty Shepard, Ben Franklin, and Eliza Pinckney began their ways by suppressing their natural thoughts, impulses, and emotions in order to fulfill the requirement society expected of them. The book offers a wide variety of historical material. 

The entire American experience is represented in a diverse array of sources, including letters, interviews, editorials, diaries, testimony, speeches and also some photographs. Individuals speak in their own words going from famous figures to ordinary people. This book aims at making people feel as if they were in the 19Th century, and helping with it to understand better their behaviors. America First Hand teaches a lesson because eventually they all came to realize that the way to better them was to do what was best for them and their situation. These three people are examples of what makes America a great country of independence. They show that you don’t have to believe what you are told, and that you should do what is best for you as you see it. 

They show that no matter your age, sex, background, or creed, you can think for yourself and help to mold our still and ever-changing country. The material that the authors present is well organized and easy to understand. I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning about how other’s viewed us becoming an independent nation during the 1800’s. Although this book is supposed to be more of a text book or an aid for students, it posses great material suited for anyone interested in knowing a little bit more about American history, narrated by the people who know the most about it, and it can only be the people who lived in those times. It was very useful for me not only because it helped me along the course to understand better specifical events, but also because this book helped me to chose the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin as my second choice for the book. I am pleased that the author kept the social, gender and racial diversity of the accounts. That is precisely what makes this compilation, a truthful prove that an author can stay neutral in his account of events. -X
