The Epic of Gilgamesh was the oldest known epic in the world. It was widely spread among Sumerian four thousand years ago. Through relatively primordial but amusing stories, the epic itself shaped heroes with indomitable mind and persistent spirit of fighting, reflecting the ancient people’s strong desire to break the law of nature and control the fate of themselves. The epic also eulogized the great minds and behaviors to serve the masses, so it had great historical meaning, which enlightened people to bring benefits to common people. This essay analyzes the epic from the perspective of Gods, making the interpretations of Gilgamesh, Ishtar, and other Gods, which proves that Gods are not perfect just as common people.
Gilgamesh, the king of ancient Sumerian city-state of Uruk, was not perfect. The king was created by gods and was given a perfect body. While, in fact, “Two thirds they made him god and on third man” (Gilgamesh 61). So he was neither entirely a god nor a human being. Moreover, as the king of a country, he should be a tyrant, bringing his people great sufferings and complaints. What’s more, his best friend and his soul-mate Enkidu died because of him, even if it was not his fault, while this tragedy should have been avoided and his friend should have been alive, if he could do something.
Ishtar, a willful girl and the goddess of love and war, was not perfect as well, though she played a important role in the epic. Just as the story of Gilgamesh described that Ishtar was “a marauding sexual predator that falls in and out of love at the drop of a hat, and always inflicts horrible punishments on her ex-lovers”. On the other hand, she was not gentle; she was merciless on the contrary. She tried to whatever she wanted by hook or by crook. She did not know to accept her father’s advice let alone other people’s suggestions. She was always revenging those who once did something bad to her.
Not only the two, but other gods were also not perfect. They should argue over small things when they assembled to discuss something essential and vital. Above all, they never cared about their people, they were, in other words, not humanitarian at all. Just as the epic described, “Even the gods were terrified at the flood, they fled to the highest heaven… they crouched against the walls, cowering like curs. Then Ishtar the sweet-voiced Queen of Heaven cried out like a woman in travail (Gilgamesh110) ”. However,“when the gods smelled the sweet savors , they gathered like flies over the sacrifice (Gilgamesh111) ”the above description in the works show that Gods also have some defect, and sometimes they also have complex emotions. Gods in Gilgamesh is endowed with power while they also are given with the same thoughts and feeling just like men.
Conclusion:
Since ancient times, People took it for granted that Gods were mighty, immortalized and humanitarian, and they could live harmoniously with each other, so there were no wars between them. The epic overturned our traditional idea that Gods were perfect, making us noticed that Gods were not perfect, they were not sacred deity but common people just as those who around us. Furthermore, the epic also stresses the bromance between Enkidu and Gilgamesh. And “death” also played a important role in the development of that story, for at last, nobody escaped the destiny of death, even if the hero of Gilgamesh. The epic showed that Gods are not perfect just as common people all the time.
