While Hitler, an initiator of furious invasion to other countries, has been a notorious household name since world war II, it is fair to say Hitler was such a successful and charismatic leader that allured a number of brilliant military talents and a large population of followers committed to serve their head. It is seemed that Hitler with strong military influence had the magic to lead people. Thus, to learn his leadership style means a great deal to current rulers or managers who expect to see a well-organized team or organization. This essay, divided into two main parts, is to make a brief study on Hitler with illustrating several examples, by drawing on relevant studies, including his characteristics, behaviors, leading skills, etc., and to form my unique leadership based on the cruel but competent ruler.
The leadership of Hitler
For more than 70 years, the world appeared to suffer from the evil leader who trigger a destructive war around the whole world. However, to reflect why he could own such extensive influence deserves attention and learning for those who desire to be effective leaders.
As a military leader and a Germany, Hitler, a terrifying figure in world history, had his unique and conspicuous features which can be remembered in the mind of generations. In the first place, Hitler’ s extreme nationalism could incite his followers’ distorted patriotism. As a result, they were obedient and willing to fight for everything to meet Hitler’ s expectations, more accurately, their own pursuit of proving their nationally superior blood. The characteristic of Hitler’ s nationalist notion could be embodied by his speeches. Hitler, himself, was a racist and he took the opportunity of addressing to advocate his so-called “ German patriotism ” to allure his subordinates to fulfill their duties. He used seductive words in his speeches such as “ every one must be convinced by now that it will continue German ” and looked down on other people of nationalities (Bulletin of International News, 1939). Hitler’ s violent love and passion to his country and nationality might sound good to his followers so that they could easily sacrifice their lives after driven by strong patriotic enthusiasm. Such behavior showed that Hitler could understand what his followers wanted, pursued, desired and chased for. It is safe to say that Hitler could grasp the ideology of his followers, and guide their ideas to the core which conformed to his interest and ruling power. In this term, he was a successful and charismatic leader with an appeal validated through the perceptions of the followers (Willner, et.al, 1965).
In addition to that, Hitler had a good vision on conquering and wars. In other words, he had excellent military talents so that he could shoulder the responsibility of his whole army. His followers could not help appreciating such a genius ruler, which in turn strengthened his stable status in their heart. His broad horizons and superior sight could be expressed through his Nazi plan. Hitler was rather ambitious and decisive, centered on his goals and kept concentrated on his plans. The brilliant talents and controlling power Hitler had were critical to a leader. People in generations could see his military gifts for each decisions he made during his tenure. He maintained a tough attitude to diplomatic relations and invasion policies as Hitler announced the removal of the Locarno Treaty, defied the Treaty of Versailles and offended Remilitarization of the Rhineland in 1936 regardless of other countries (Thies, 2012). Hitler held an arbitrary personality and often ignored other people’ s opinions and feelings but he was decisive and persistent.
Last but not least, while Hitler turned a cruel and bloody attitude towards aliens, he was careful and thoughtful to his people, which was an attractive leader from subordinates’ view. Hitler had issued many policies and plans to safeguard Germans’ benefit and welfare. He announced increasing tax to those with high salary, creating new jobs, offering allowance to children, raising workers’ pension, issuing treasuries, building express highway, and so forth (Kimpel & Eaves, 1983). Hitler’ s love to his country and special patriotism acted as a persuasive means of dominate followers or even the whole military region because they held similar complex of Germany. Hitler seemed “ charitable ” to his people, showing his carefulness and protection to followers. As a consequence, Hitler could draw followers’ admiration, respect and even gratitude and the leadership of Hitler could be remembered as charismatic symbol which could create higher performance and motivated more people by satisfying them and meeting their expectations (Conger, et.al., 2000). His thoughtful arrangements for German people, along with his proactive speeches, could to a large degree inspire people’ s fascination on him so that they were always ready to serve him. It seemed undeniable that Hitler owned attractive personalities in the view of his followers and his political practice could prove his admirable behaviors, constructing his charming leadership.
In a word, Hitler could be regarded as a decisive, arbitrary, ambiguous, good-vision leader who appeared to be a born genius ruler or manager. Through provocative speeches and careful behavior to his followers, Hitler, as a charming leader, successfully controlled their spirits and ideas. The history has proved his effective and efficient management. Thus, Hitler fully conformed to the standard as a leader, and he even played the role better. Based on Trevisani’ opinion on leadership (2015), an accomplished leader need to control others (Primal Leadership), have extraordinary mental energies and motivational forces (Psychoenergetic Leadership), is able to manage the execution of a task (Project Leadership) and maintain a better level of values, wisdom, and spirituality (Spiritual Leadership). Hitler had features of various types of leaders and could be seen as a representative of talented or even genius leaders.
My unique leadership learning from Hitler’ s case
Hitler’ s case has brought me lessons when I decided to become an outstanding leader in a current society. After all, Hitler had various advantages that I can draw to form my unique leading way because I wish to become an effective and ambiguous leader someday.
First of all, Hitler’ s superior military talents inspires me to strengthen my expertise and foster professional knowledge in that great competence can persuade subordinates to follow managers’ decisions. To make followers obedient, obtain their respect and keep a good level of staff loyalty, excellent gifts seem necessary.
Besides, I am determined to become an ambiguous and decisive leader with high capability to perform on work, which largely is consistent with how Hitler dealt with his leading affairs. Ambiguity itself can bring about more opportunities and space for improvement. Also, I should learn from Hitler’ s firm determination to achieve objectives. Setting certain goal, spare no efforts to attain it at any rate with different means, which should be my managerial motto in practice.
The last thing I can borrow from Hitler’ case is his care about and protection to his followers, which will increase a leader’ s attractiveness. Attention and respect to subordinates can promote a manager’ s position in their heart. Thus, I will emphasize a kind attitude towards employees to get their lasting loyalty.
Conclusion
Massive advantages can be reflected from Hitler’ s leadership. To reap a better managerial effect, the name of Hitler, whom I have learned much from, can be used as an educational tool of management.
