Many decades ago, when African American were still prejudiced all around the nation, most high quality colleges were reluctant to accept students other than the white Anglo Saxons. Therefore, back in the 1900s, the colleges administrators only recruit one kind of race or to be more specific, college tried to segregate the less privileged from the more “privileged”. However, this action had led to one bad result all over the nation. Obviously, students are narrow minded and the majority of them were reluctant to accept new comers no matter in schools or offices. They were unconsciously taught to repel other people for no reasons and prefer to get cooped up in the small social groups where “friends” share the same racial background and family background. (Gurin. P, 2011)
In addition, another negative result of a college without diversity is that it also creates a wider educational gap for different groups of them. Now colleges are no longer solely consisting of white students or the students from upper class families. In the past, only the rich, the powerful and the white were granted with the chance to be recruited in colleges. However, right now, the number of students from different races and from lower income families is rising rapidly.
I believe it is the symbol of the progress and open-mindedness of the nation. Obviously, more and more Americans from every color and different religions have got the access to college education. Therefore, students in colleges are able to get in touch with acquaintances outside their own ethnicity and beliefs.
Diversity in colleges is important not only because a wider range of students can bring a higher chance of prize winning for the schools. Instead, diversity in universities should be sought out for the advantages and benefits of the students. Firstly, the world outside of colleges is a space full of a variety of choices and people, the purpose of college education is to provide students with the chance to gain real life skills so that they are able to understand the rules of survival after they graduate from colleges. Therefore, colleges are responsible to make sure the place where their students study in should be in sync with the real world outside of the ivory tower. (Gurin. P, 2011)
However, in reality, many colleges are not diverse enough. According to the statistics from the National Center for Education Statistics, it is obvious that when colleges decide to hire full time professors in universities, they have a preference for the white professors instead of the black scholars although though both of them are as qualified as one another. In fact, over a million college professors are white and less then one hundred thousands of them are black and number of faculty from Asia is less then ninety thousands. (Lindsay. B, W. J & Blanchett , 2012) Obviously, even now in the environment where all people should be treated equally, many colleges are still not willing to grant the minority the equal chance. This is beyond the issues of inequality because college is not the same as other places like the companies. College is the place where young people are educated and taught about certain beliefs and knowledge. (Lindsay. B, W. J & Blanchett , 2012) As a result, the fact that college administrators themselves choose to favor the white Anglo Saxon staff easily passes on the message to the students that Asians and black people are less qualified and less intelligent.
It is worth mentioning that diversity is important in college because diversity can prepare college students for better and more prosperous future career since nowadays, if a person wants to gain the approval from peers in the office or from their bosses, it is important to have the ability to get along with people in the workplace or to be albel to blend in so that tasks that require cooperation can be done more effectively.
Besides, if a person wants to be the manager or to be the person that runs the office and get in charge of employees, being qualified with certain skills is far from enough. In fact, he or she should be able to have sensitivity to human differences. It means that to be successful in one’s career, one needs to have the ability to understand his own colleagues and care fro them. Especially in America, which is the country with the most diverse workforce. For example, in the Silicon Valley, talented employees are recruited regardless of their gender, sex or age. Taking a tour to the Silicon Valley, a person can see that even middle aged women or elderly African Americans are dedicating their time and knowledge into building a fancy video game or a new generation Xbox and app. (Gurin. P, 2011)
Besides, diversity is able to improve social development. If students in colleges are able to interact with people from a more various group, it helps students to learn how to interact with the pool of people whom they can associate with, especially with the people from an entirely different belief system and a different environment. The world is no longer ruled by the White Anglo Saxon men. On the contrary, there are famous and successful female entrepreneurs and rulers in many countries. In fact, the election of Barack Obama is a good example of black people rising up to rule the nation. Therefore, a larger variety of choices means that the universities are able to cultivate more talented people with more various skills.
Besides, diversity helps prepare students to fit in the global society. Those who are against the idea of diversity in the university might argue that to put people from all kinds of backgrounds in the university might result in conflicts because they cannot see eye on eye for may issues. However, diversity itself does not bring conflicts. It is people’s narrow mindedness and their stubborn attitude against diversity that result in conflict. There is a serious issue on the group of privileged people. They have assumed that there is nothing for them to learn from the ones with a humbler family background.
However, diversity in university helps promote creativity, make progress and intrigue social mobility. People from all manner of family backgrounds all have their own capabilities to contribute in the society, regardless of their gender, race, skin color or even sex orientation. Besides, our society is need of a more diverse productive workforce that is without discrimination because discrimination is the biggest obstacle that prevents real progress and cooperation. In order to solve the problem of prejudice and discrimination, it is important to cultivate college students’ mindset and attitude by letting them accept diversity in colleges. A greater diversity means a more colorful world with a variety of talented employees and a more productive workforce.
