1. Biography of Omar Carrum

Omar Carrum was born in Mexico city in 1973. In 1991, he began his formal dance training and studies at the Estudio Profesional de Danza Ema Pulito. Soon after that, in 1993, he joined Delfos Danza Contemporánea, at which he starts his career life with multi-identities, which are dancer, choreographer teacher, video maker and researcher of movement, scene, body states, anatomy, nutrition and biomechanics.

2. Carrum’s Contributions to Dance

Since 1995, he has studied, practiced and taught yoga. In 2012, Carrum developed the program UNITY, which integrates training, prevention, rehabilitation and auto treatment for dancers. Other than that, he has been featured in over sixty pieces of dances, theaters, and operas, and performed with international choreographers in some of the highly reputed theaters and festivals for dance around the world.

As a choreographer teacher, in 1998, Carrum, along with Claudia Lavista and Victor Ruiz (Artistic Directors of Delfos), co-created La Escuela Profesional de Danza de Mazatlán (also known as EPDM) which has shined as one of the leading and most influencing dancing talent pools in Mexico and Latin America at large. In 2007, he became the academic director of EPDM. In 2008, EPDM received an award for its pedagogical contributions to the emerging generations of young artists.

And Carrum has been a faculty member teaching modern dance, jazz, choreography, yoga, anatomy and nutrition and has been invited to teach all around Mexico, US, Dominican Republic, Japan, Brazil, Colombia and Panama. To devote more to dance and education, since 2007, he creates and directs the project called “HABITAT, Dance and consciousness”. He leads a team of artists to teach dance to more than 300 children in four poor neighborhoods in Mazatlan.

As a choreographer, Carrum has created over 30 works for Delfos, EPDM, Compañía Serpiente, Compañía Danzare de Guadalajara, Japan Classical Dance schools “Aurora” and Semountnori, Dance school of UNAM, as well as the project Oxigeno.

As a video maker, his most recent short film “Fifth Wall” which was co-directed with Dutch Rall was selected in Cannes 2013, Short Film Corner, and in Agitey Sirva 2014 selection.

As a researcher, Carrum was supported by Guggenheim fellowship who was the first Mexican choreographer to win this fellowship in 2009. From then on, he starts to engage in research projects concerning the transformation process of the scenic artist which is inspired by his posture as dancer, his pedagogical methods and actual choreographic proposals.

As a dancer, in 2011 he creates along with Vladimir Rodriguez, Escrito Absurdo, which has been performed more than 30 times in different venues and Festivals in Mexico, Colombia, France, Brazil and Panama.  In 2014 he becomes a member of the National System of Arts Creators which is one of the most prestigious recognition for artists in Mexico.
3. Carrum’s Style

In Carrum’s work “Joan”, it presents a visual aesthetics of power. His movements and motions in this work are strong which creates a shocking effects among audience. Through repeating movements, a strong sense of irritation and inner confliction can be conveyed to the audience. To balance and harmonize the whole piece of work, Carrum uses a long wide violet dress to soften the whole dance. The integration of strong movements and motions and gentle costume is designed aiming to show the complexity and struggling of the inner world of the dancer.
