Recipe for Success
I wanted to present this propsal to the administration of Hammond High School to give you Principal Fullilove and the Hammond High Community an overall synopsis of my vision for the football program and most importantly the vision of the Administration of Hammond High School.
I’m submitting this letter to express my genuine interest in becoming the next head football coach at Hammond High School. I’m a proud Alum of Simeon High School in Chicago. I was very blessed to be coach by one of the all-time greatest coaches in Illinois High School Football history. Not only was Al Scott was a great coach, but he was even a greater man. He was a mentor and was a father figure for a lot of young men including myself who didn’t have positive male role models in their lives. Coach Scott was a life coach as well as a football coach. I coach under the tooledge of Coach Scott from 2003-2005, before I went on to become the head coach at Dyett High and from there the head coach at Kenwood High School. I was successful at both programs I managed, I had a positive relationship with school administration, parents and community. I left Simeon in 2003 to better prepare myself as a Head Coach for this very opportunity I dreamed about since the untimely death of Coach Al Scott. I think the knowlegde that I acquire through College Football and my years in the National Football league has taught me a great deal about football and most importantly life. I’m eager to share my knowledge of the game and my life experiences to the student athletes of Hammond High.. Me and my coaching staff who consist of all Simeon Alumni will do everything in our power to live up to and exceed the expectation that is set for Hammond High School Football for years to come athletically and most importantly academically. I’m submitting this proposal to show to the Hammond High Administration that I’m capable of building a power house academically as well as athletically.
I. Academics
This will be the most important part of my program. Academics will be express thoroughly to each and every student athlete, not just football players, but every athlete that attends Hammond High School. For any Student Athlete how have any hopes of attending Hammond High School and participating with the Hammond High Football Program will from the 7th grade on the being a senior will learn that academics comes first, discipline second and Athletics third.
Academic Portfolio’s
Every Hammond High Football Player will be required to have a Academic Portfolio upon entering Hammond High School that will be created by me and my staff as a freshman until he graduates as a Senior.
Purpose: The purpose of the portforlio is to accumulate
As much academic information on each individual
Student athletic throughout his or her four years
In High School. This process will allow me as the
Head Football Coach to monitor the strengths and
Weakness of every student athletic academically
That participates in the Hammond football Program.
This system will provide an overall preview to the
Athletic Director and Principal of Hammond High
the progress academically of Hammond High School
student athletes. Portforlio’s of each Senior will
Be a great barometer for college recruiters to
Assess the overall fit of the Student Athlete and
Their respective school.
Study Hall
Every Hammond Football Player is required to perform 5 to 8 hours of study Hall a week throughout the season and 3 to 5 hours in the offseason. There will be a coach on my staff that will be designated to monitor each player and accumulate the hours of each player. There will be an sign in and sign out sheet in the library that each student must sign as well as the coach or coaches assigned to supervise study hall.
Purpose:To ensure that each student athlete is making an
Conscious effort to improve, maintain or exceed
The academic expectation of Hammond High School.
My goal as Head Coach is to motivate all student
Athletes that attends Hammond High School exceed
All academic expectations.
Monthly Meetings with school counselors and Administration
As Head Coach I would like to perform monthly meetings with counselors and administration to access the overall progress of the program as a whole academically, athletically as well as seek advice from administration and counselors or how to better perform my duties as Head Coach to ensure that the Student Athlete excell.
Grade Checks
Every Student Athlete will be subject to bi-weekly grade checks. This will give the coaches data to add to each individual portfolio. This will also give the coaching staff the data needed to identify which subject that a student may have deficiency in and help develop a plan to get that student athlete the necessary help needed for that subject. This will also afford the opportunity for the Coaching staff and Teachers to develop positive relationship among each other.
Purpose: To ensure that every student athletic remains on
Task academically. This process is all school
Year.
Academic Boot Camp
This faze of the academic portion is strictly design for the student athletic who is in serious trouble academically, who refuses to perform study hall hours without an valid excuse, who is in need of extra help in a particular subject. This program is available to any student, athlete or non athlete. This program will have to involve all coaches from all athletic programs of Hammond High School . The vision that I have for this program will be the following: The program will be on Saturday mornings. Time can be negotiable. I will attempt to out source to nonprofit organizations that provide tutoring sources to help our student athlete succeed. I would want ACT and SAT preparation as well as the student athletic, gaining knowledge of what it is to prop 48 and the process of Clearinghouse and recruiting. Coaches will be responsible for all student athletes and will provide positive mentoring and encouragement to the Student Athletics.
Purpose: To show the student athletic that Hammond High
school is just as invested in their academic
Prowess and well as athletically. This is also
Design To provide encouragement, assistance and
Discipline to the student athlete who is not
Development academically to Hammond High School
Standards.
Monthly meeting with Seniors and their parents.
I believe this is very important faze of the educational process. This will give the coaching staff and parents an opportunity to develop or present an academic plan to the parents for their child. I will sit down with each parent and go over their child portfolio to discuss strengths and weakness of their childs progress academically. This will also help the parent understand the childs need academically. Coaches will have a chance to explain to them the recruiting process, their eligibility to participate in high school or college athletics.
Purpose: The purpose of these meeting is to ensure that the
Parents remain involved and understand the
Importance of their childs education. This meeting
Is also design to show the parents that the
Hammond Football Program is making a conscious
Effort to prepare Their child for the next level
of education as Well as athletically.
Bi Monthly Meeting with Juniors and their parents.
Same as above
Purpose: Same as above
Goal of the Academic Program
The goal of this academic program is to ensure that the student athletic has accumulated positive data that will ensure him or her an opportunity to move on to the next level which is college. It is very important for a Student Athletic to attack the academics as hard they attack the athletics. It will be an understanding among all administration, parents and student athletes that Coach Dedrick Dewalt is Academics is first and if you happen to want to play football great. I will seek out and capture any football player that is not performing to academic excellence and force feed them the help he or she may need to excel. There are only five options in my program and it is really simple. Div.1, Div. 2, Div. 3, NAIA, or Job industry.
Case Management
With me being a case manager, I know the importance of accumulating and monitoring information, data and statistics. I’ll provide this type of service to all Athletic programs at Hammond High School, if I’m chosen to be Head Coach. I’m well organized and resourceful to provide the work needed to monitor in great detail the progress of each individual football player and well as other athletic programs in the school.

The Student Athletes will understand that there is a certain way that a young man should carry themselves and encourage them to be proud of the way they carry themselves on and of the field. My Coaches will need to follow the same model and understanding of what it means to be a coach at Hammond High School.

Fundraising
We as the Hammond Football Program will work hard at the fundraising aspect of the program. Even though football has the ability to profit very well, it is important to bring money back into the program through fundraising. Here is a list of things that will help raise money for the football program.
1. Candy Sale
2. Pizza Drive
3. Car Wash
4. Utilize Hammmond Facilities, I would love to run football clinics for 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. This also can be used as a recruiting tool.
5. Food plates
6. Promote Dances within the school.
We can use most of the money to rent school buses and necessary football equipment without destroying the school budget. Football can be very expensive. We can also use the money to assist other athletic programs.
Duties of an Head Coach.
My duties as Head Coach at Hammond High School will be to teach, motivate and encourage our student athletes to excel academically as well as athletically. My Job as a Head Coach is to mentor and prepare mentally and physically the student athlete for the next level which is college. My Job as a Head is to be a positive role model not only for the Hammond Football Team, but for the school and community. It is my responsibility to inspire my coaches to be productive and ensure that they are teaching the student athletes to the best of their ability. It is also my duty to teach and enhance my coaches to become head coaches for their own programs. So we can spread this wealth of knowledge to a city full of children who is in desperate need of coaching and life skills. It is my responsibilty to make sure that my coaching staff and athletes are safe and free from harm under my watch. It is my responsibility that all athletes are physically able to participate in physical activities. It is also my responsibility to ensure that my student athletes are eligible to participate in all sports and make sure the transition is smooth from high school to college.
Vision of Hammond Football
I want Hammond High School to become a place where parents will be confident and know that their child will have a opportunity to excel academically and athletically. I want Hammond to be known as a place that recruiters want to come and have their choice of student athletes. I want Hammond to be a place that is known for sending student athletes to college and they becoming productive citizens as well as athletes. I want Hammond Football to be known as perennial state champions. I want college recruiters to see that my coaching staff and know that student athletes are being taught fundamentals of the game and having the pedigree to become an even better person.
I want to be know as a coach that not only won on the field, but won off the field. I want to be known as a coach that sends a number student athletes to school vs a number of football victories he accumulated. I want my legacy to be a life coach as well as a football coach.
This will conclude my presentation. I’m very passionate about having the opportunity to become a coach Hammond High School. It is very important to me, if Principal Fullilove, will give me the privelage to coach her football program, I will live up to the standard set by Principal Fullilove and her administration.
