Why I want to be a nurse: I knew I wanted to be a nurse since I was knee high to a grasshopper. My grandmother raised me while she cared for patients in her home. She was an RN and you could tell she loved what she did. I helped her when I was young and always looked forward to taking care of the “ladies” and making them feel better. From the age of 17 – 28 I worked in the hospital as a pharmacy buyer, while in that job I always admired the nursing staff. As I needed to work and support my family school was never an option for me. Then I was married, had my own family and made good money so again nursing school was just not an option. Well, I got laid off from my job in March 2009… after multiple attempts at finding work I decided it was time for me to go back to school. When I was looking into career options, nursing attracted my attention on so many levels. You could go anywhere, work with adults, children, in public health, prisons, physicians offices, schools, factories, home health after thinking about it I found that nursing could be what -ever I would want to make it. People need nurses in all aspects of life and being a natural born caregiver I am here to be a nurse. The sensation that you feel when you know you have accomplished your goal to aid an individual is priceless… to me that is success at the end of the day. Nursing is probably the most personally rewarding job there is. For the people I will care for, I see myself making a difference, whether it is bringing physical, emotional, or spiritual comfort. Knowing the fact that you can help or offer your help without hesitations is very encouraging. Nursing is a respected profession. People not only need nurses, they look up to them for support and direction. I think this is the best career move I would ever make. Being a nurse is not just an occupation; it's more like a commitment to the profession of nursing. I am aware that nursing is a profession filled with challenges starting with an intense preparatory education program, which leads to physically strenuous work schedules and mentally demanding clinical decision-making. However… this is my calling, my dream and it is finally within reach.
