Why I should bring my English books to class Books are fundamental to our knowledge and understanding of the world around us, and encompass many different topics, but perhaps most important of all are the books of English literature, for without such sources of information we are condemned to fail at every task in life. Hamlet, The Canterbury Tales, Wind in The Willows – all perfect examples of great English literature, which surpass all other subjects and render them obsolete in comparison. Why learn about the struggles of man, and how we have overcome many challenges and learned from our mistakes through history, when you can identify and explain themes within a novel' Why study the useless skills of basic arithmetic, algebra and trigonometry in mathematics when being able to recognize relationships between characters in a theatrical play is much more practical' Perhaps learning about the earth and our universe, and how it functions through the explanations provided by science is pointless, given that we can discover the many forms and features of language found within a poem using the wonders of English. It is for reasons such as these that one must never forget to bring their English books to class. Any student so incompetent and negligent as to somehow forget to bring their books with them to class should be punished severely, but through the compassion and grace of English teachers we are given a second chance, as the first offence must have been brought upon by profound mental retardation. However, should a student manage to forget his book again, it must have been made out of not ignorance or coincidence, but as a direct act of defiance against the teacher. And as such, fair and appropriate action will be taken to prevent the student from ever committing such an unforgivable mistake again. It pains me to say that I myself fall into the small group of people who had the audacity to defy the teacher, nay, everyone with a passion for English, even the great Shakespeare, hallowed be his name, and for this I was punished – burdened with the task of outlining the importance of bringing my books to English class. But I do not see this as a form of punishment, for I have changed my ways, turned over a new leaf. I see this as a gift, an opportunity to grow and give back to the subject that has already done so much for me, I would even go so far as to say I am unworthy of such a task, yet I will still strive to achieve as much as I can in the name of English. As in doing so, I can hope to convince others like me to turn back to the righteous subject. In bringing your English books to class, not only are you providing yourself with a wealth of knowledge and the chance to discuss such riveting topics as acceptable social relations with women as perceived by younger males, but you also alleviate the feeling of anxiety caused by the fear of being discovered by both your teachers and your peers to be without such a crucial item, as you will surely be ridiculed and humiliated, for such an abnormal event is almost unheard of. But the benefits of bringing your English books to class aren’t bound to subject itself, it also provides a stable working platform for all other areas of schooling life. Although all courses other than English are deemed a waste of time by right-minded people, it doesn’t put you at a disadvantage to excel at other subjects, such as chemistry, history or mathematics – and such a task is easily achieved when the skills and discipline obtained from English are applied. When you learn to do this, you can achieve any academic goal you wish to obtain and although university courses such as Chemical engineering and medicine are undesirable, its always nice to have a fallback incase you fail to qualify for an arts degree. English is much more than just a subject; it is a way of life. It governs how we act, think and live, and the texts are the essential tools. That is why I should always bring my English books to class. Written at the end of year 10, after failing to produce my homework I was asked to submit a two-page essay on ‘Why I should bring my English books to class’. My teacher was surprisingly impressed by the sarcasm/satire.
