Tobacco is an agricultural product processed from the leaves of plants in the genus Nicotiana, which is often used as recreational drug in cigarettes. During my speech, I hope to discuss three main points: the undeniable health risks of using tobacco; then I will talk about all the horrific substances contained in tobacco;
Firstly, I would like to state the obvious, but most important negative of using tobacco: It’s undeniable health risks. Thousands of people die every year as a result of smoking cigarettes, cigars and pipes. The combined effects of nicotine, (which as we know is the main drug in tobacco) and other gases which enter the lungs when smoked, greatly increases the chance of disease and bad health. Smoking has been directly linked to lung cancer, heart disease and other major illnesses, as well being dangerous during pregnancy for the mother and unborn child. Passive smoking can put the health of loved ones at risk, which is highly selfish for the sake of just a pleasurable unnecessary item. Millions of people survive without cigarettes, so why should the tobacco drug be brainwashing their smoking victims into thinking they NEED a cigarette' Statistics have shown that one quarter of Britain's 15 year olds are regular smokers. It is estimated that half of all teenagers who are currently smoking will die from diseases caused by tobacco if they continue to smoke throughout their lives and one half of this number will have their lives shortened by an average of 23 years. The development and selling of cigarettes are jeopardizing our future generations. Do we really want to see our children’s health go up in a CLOUD OF SMOKE'
My second point is to reveal all the disgustingly horrific substances in tobacco, which is put into cigarettes and inhaled freely into our bodies. Firstly, nicotine, the addictive drug that brings you up to brainless highs and catastrophic lows. Next, ammonia: the hazardous substance, often used as a fertilizer, or to clean grime. Its aim is keep you hooked on smoking. Arsenic, said to be one of the deadliest poisons, is also included, which is also contained in rat poisonings. Then there’s Benzene, contained often in cement or the fuel you fill your cars with. Due to it being carcinogenic, it’s massively cancer-causing. There’s also acetone, the main ingredient to nail polish remover. Then there’s formaldehyde, the stuff used to embalm dead people. Lead is also an ingredient to these ‘pleasurable items’, which causes serious damage to the brain. And last but not least there’s hydrogen cyanide, a friendly chemical that used to be used to kill people in gas chambers. With every inhalation of tobacco, all these substances will soon be circulating round your body. Really, need I say more'
Lastly is the effects smoking tobacco can have on your life. I’ve already stated all the health risks, but there are a number of other effects. Physically, your body goes downhill. Dull skin, nicotine-stained fingers, premature wrinkling and stained teeth are all effects of smoking tobacco. You have a lack of energy and concentration. And don’t forget the social effects you’re inflicting upon the earth. Smoking pollutes the air with carcinogens, inflicting possible cancer on others as well as yourself. Around smokers, children are at higher risk of asthma, cot-death and bronchitis. There are increased risks of fires in the home, plus your furniture and clothes end up with that sickeningly ‘unique’ smell. Ontop of all these life-ruining smoking side-effects, at today's rates, a 20-a-day smoker will spend £43,800 on cigarettes over the next 20 years. That money could pay off a mortgage. That money can give over 700 families in poverty clean water for a lifetime. Everyone wants to live for as long as possible, why deliberately cut your life short'
In conclusion, tobacco is addictive and as we all know it is difficult to quit smoking, but don’t the risks of smoking outweigh the positives' Horrific substances are a part of tobacco, and these can have life-threatening results on yourself and your peers
