Who believes more in love at first sight, men or women'
Method
The first part of the experiment will be a lab study where the participants will be shown a series of images of the opposite sex who are attractive. We will then measure their heart rate and hormone levels to see the differences from before the image and after. When all of the data is collected from each of the participants the results will then be complied in to quantitative data. The second part of the experiment will be a an anonymous questionnaire. The results collected from this will then be compiled and compared to the lab study results and averaged out as a whole to get the overall statistics.
There are many advantages in using these methods of research for example in the case of lab studies the investigator has control over all aspects and there is also access to specialised equipment and the experiment can be replicated. When using questionnaires the main advantages are the fact that they are cheap, quick and easy and can be easily replicated.
However there are also some disadvantages to using these methods the main one being behavioural changes such as evaluation apprehension and demand characteristics in the lab study and social desirability in the questionnaires. There Is also the problem of low ecological validity in the lab studies as the participants may act differently as they are not in there natural enviroment.
Sample
in my experiment there will be 25 male and 25 female participants, equal number so the experiment is fair also there will be varied in age from sixteen to thirty, all of the participants will be single and will be from different cultures.
Aims
to find out how gender effects who believes more in love at first sight.
Hypothesis – non directional
there will be a relationship between gender and who believes In love at first sight more.
Independent Variable - The gender of participants
Dependant Variable – Who believes more in love at first sight/ hormones and heart rate changes
Operationalised – measuring heart rate and hormones / counting results
There are some ethical issues I need to take in to consideration in my experiment as they need to be solved in the best way to ensure the physical and mental safety of the participants. The main issue is the effects from the blood tests needed to measure the hormones levels and the heart rate in order to protect the participants presumptive consent is needed any medical assistant on hand if in any situation help is needed. The only other foreseeable problems that might occur are mentally, in the form of embarrassment to the participants due to the evasiveness of the tests and questions.
There are also some investigator effects which may effect the experiment
but which can be solved quite simply for example the gender of the investigator in relation to the individual participant as the results may be affected. However this is solved as there will be a male investigator as well as a female investigator to decrease the changes of incorrect results.
The only other factor to assess to make allowances for is demand characteristics which are mainly a factor in the the lab study as the participants may react differently with a investigator in the same room when the tests are done as they may be embarrassed the only solution to this is to ensure there is no connection between the investigator and participant and to make sure all participants have given fully informed consent so they are aware of all aspects of the experiment. The only demand characteristic significant in the questionnaires is social desirability which cannot be solved as the questionnaires are anonymous people may feel they can tell the complete truth but that is the only precaution which can be taken.
