The Titanic was one of the most luxurious ships ever made with a swimming pool, Turkish bath, and gym. The ship was designed by William Pirrie and was built in the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. Their were 2,223 people on the Titanic on board when they left England and only 706 when they came back. When the ship left on Wednesday, April 10th 1912 and at 2:10 AM on Sunday April 14th they hit an ice berg in the Atlantic Ocean. The ice berg hit the ship on the side and made a dent allowing water to flow true the cracks. Some people believe that the Titanic sunk because of the ice berg and the and the titanic just being in the wrong place or it’s the captains fault. I believe it was because the White Star Line , the company that built the ship.
One of the managing directors, Bruce Ismay, of the White Star Line that was on the Titanic on her maiden voyage. The Titanic was to meet the schedule of six days which meant that they had to go at max speed, 23 knots(30 mph). The captain of the Titanic was warned about ice bergs being in the water and its rumored that he wanted to slow down but was pressured by Ismay to keep going at full speed to meet schedule. Because the White Star Line company wanted to keep its good reputation and satisfy its passengers it puts their customers in danger and only to stay right on schedule.
Another White Star Line employee also put the passengers in danger. The White Star Line company believed the Titanic was unsinkable and that their was nothing that threatened the ship in the water. So the White Star Line didn’t worry about anything happening to the ship because if anything should happen they would have sixteen watertight compartments. Thomas Andrews, the ships architect, made the watertight doors not go as high as they were supposed to do. He didn’t make it go that high because that would take up more room thus making less rooms for the passengers. Wanting the business of more people and less care for the passengers of the White Star Line again put the passengers of the Titanic in danger.
The White Star Line also wanted to save money while building the Titanic. The Titanic had almost the million rivets, a mechanical fastener, that were all around the Titanic keeping it together. A rivet has a head that is at one end and the other end has a smooth cylinder shaft coming out. When the ice berg hit the Titanic the rivet heads broke and opened up cracks in the wall allowing water in the ship. After the ship sank some of the rivets that hit the ice bergs were found and showed that White Star Line used sub-stranded iron. This was a cheap material and if more money was spent could have bought quality iron rivets that could of kept the ship from sinking.
One of the employees at the White Star Line , Carlisle, suggested at the design stage that they use a new larger type of davit, a steel structure to lower things from the boat, that could let the ship carry 48 lifeboats that had enough room for everyone on board . Instead of spending that much money on this they decided t only have 16 wooden life boats while 16 not being their decided decision and the minimum allowed by the board of trade. There was also four folding lifeboats, and all this put together only could 52 percent of the people on board the ship. While the davit could hold 48 lifeboats.
The other 68 percent that was left on the boat sank with the ship and 1,517 people were lost. The White Star Line showed some honor in the end and sent three ships to retrieve the body’s left in the water and found 333 bodies and most were sent to be buried in their hometown and other were buried in Halifax cemeteries. There are memorials of the titanic in England, Belfast, and two in the United States. The Titanic is also planned on April 15, 2012 to be the 100th anniversary of the Titanic. The White Star Line and its employees could have save the sip if they put more money and thought in the ship and its passengers.
