When_Does_Nationalism_Become_Ultra_Nationalism_

When does nationalism become ultra nationalism' Where people draw the line is a matter of opinion. Everybody is part of some sort of nation and feels towards it, whether it be negative or positive a small amount or a large amount. Ultra nationalism is when somebody is so overly devoted to their nation that their sense of nation grows very large and they feel the need to be completely loyal. What they do can be atrocious, but in their mind they feel that what they are doing is proper and will help their nation grow. Some people may agree and some may think that the person or groups actions were overreactions and ultra nationalistic. Where somebody decides that it is no longer purely nationalism but has elevated to ultra nationalism sometimes can depend on how that person feels towards nationalism personally. The sources in one way or another show ultra nationalism. Unnecessary genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. In source one, it shows the Japanese Canadian internment notice. This is an act of ultra nationalism because the Canadians felt threatened by the Japanese. They also experienced racism towards them. These feelings caused the Canadians to want to protect their own nation. This is also a crime against humanity. Basically it is depriving Japanese people as a civic group of their lives. The right to vote, own land and taking away their rights to be in certain places. And if they didn’t listen they were sent to internment (war) camps. In the camps they were forced to live in poor housing with up to 10 other families. Unfair treatment to these people caused physical and mental damage. But perhaps made them grow closer as a people also. It’s mainly the way you perceive things. Either way this was an act of ultra nationalism and a crime against humanity. In source two, it shows the hatred Adolf Hitler had for the Jewish nation. He rose to power and convinced the Germans that what he believed was true and acceptable. They needed to take back what they had lost through WWI and through the treaty of Versailles. His solution to carry that out was to make more room for the German people. By getting rid of the Jews, the Germans could live a better life. Besides, the war wasn’t their fault; it was all because of the Jewish people, homosexuals, children and all but the Germans. No responsibility was taken by the Germans. Hitler truly believed that the Jewish nation was a disease that had to be exterminated. He didn’t think twice about how this would affect the Jewish people. It, like the Japanese Canadian internment act scarred them mentally and physically for eternity. In other views it may have built the Jewish nation, it is up to them how they react to what has happened. The sign in this source tells Germans not to buy from Jews, claiming they were not to be trusted. His thoughts and beliefs are a perfect example of ultra nationalism. He wanted so badly to ream the Jewish out of Germany that he committed a mass genocide. All because of how he felt for his own Nation. In source three, it talks about forced militarism (conscription). Fighting and defending ones own country to some, conscription may be acceptable and expected. A country is where a person lives; it is an honor that they even have the opportunity to be a part in such a place. To fight for their freedom and rights, to protect all that they have makes honest sense and is a roll they must play being part of such a nation. Conscription caused by a government telling one to fight for something other than their country should be an option. If one does not care or believe in what they are being forced to fight for is unfair. It could go against everything they believe in. It isn’t something they had wanted. Perhaps something they were unfamiliar with. In some cases, fighting for something other, may be something they believe in so voluntarily fight. Either way it isn’t right to force this upon people. For the Germans, they believed they were defending their nation or country so most didn’t have a problem with fighting against the Jews. Even if they didn’t believe, most fought for fear of being prosecuted themselves, who were they to side with the Jews. Conscription for a Country should be expected. Conscription for other reasons should be of choice. When does nationalism become ultra nationalism' All still a matter of opinion. If a person was racist against Japanese people and was threatened by their presence, then they would agree with what happened. If a German in WW2 thought that what was happening was for the growth and care for their nation, then there was nothing wrong with getting rid of the Jews. Or maybe they thought it all to be non-sense and an overreaction. Fighting for ones country and nation under conscription is acceptable and all part of being involved in a nation and is part of ones sense of nation. Fighting for something rather than a persons own country or nation should be a personal choice. As Walt Whitman said “The Powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse! What will your verse be' Life is about creating and molding your own path, it is about your story. Each trial and tribulation only draws us closer to the truth; our truth!”. How these acts effected the people involved is up to them. Ultra nationalism along with acts of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes are all represented in the sources and explanations above. Where you draw the line is up to you.
