What would Buffy or I Do'
Many people in the world are faced with ethics on a daily basis. The question is, “What is ethics'” According to the online dictionary ethics is “The study of the general nature of morals and of the specific moral choices to be made by a person.” In my opinion, I believe ethics is a broad term and that everyone has their beliefs. Ethics in my opinion is what one feels or believes is right from wrong; ethics also may consist of what one’s religious background calls for and doing what the law requires. As Jason Kawal said, “When faced with dilemmas we might ask ourselves. “What would Buddha do'” “What would Jesus do'” or perhaps “What would Buffy do'” and we then try to act as they would.”
Today, people are put in the position of making decisions that is based on their lives. We are constantly asking ourselves “What is the right decision to make' Will this decision affect my life or others' Is it the truth or a lie'” In the words of Manuel Velasquez, “one has to take these into consideration whenever one is making daily decisions.” In the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Buffy has to deal with ethical decisions based on her life. These questions have put Buffy in the toughest position. Each episode has its ethical decisions, but the main ones I would like to focus on are in the episode, “Becoming: Part One and Two.” In these episodes Buffy comes to realize the problem at hand and has to decide what is the right thing to do. She must act in a smart and quick manner and enforce or act upon her final decisions carefully. As comparison to my ethical decisions I had to make in my life I was just like Buffy.
Buffy has come to comprehend what her life is all about and now she has to start weighing her options. Buffy wants to give up vampire slaying but at the same time she knows that if she gives up slaying many people are endangered. Several people don’t know it but Sunnydale has to depend on Buffy to keep the city safe. In the episode, “Becoming: Part Two,” Buffy knows that there is a chance for Angel to overcome his evil soul and restore it back to normal; however at any given time he can quickly switch back to evil, but even though she is in love with Angel she has to put herself last and think about what’s best for the world.
In similar situations as Buffy, I had to make the right decisions. I wasn’t ethical at first such as Buffy didn’t want to be a slayer anymore and I didn’t want to finish my assignment stocking as a receiving associate at work because we were short a few workers and needed help. Instead I put myself in danger such as Buffy would’ve put Sunnydale; I chose to horseplay during work with my associates and injured my leg. As previously mentioned ethical decisions are what you know is right and wrong, I knew I made the wrong decision. I chose to slack off and put the company at risk of losing money and sales; not only did I put them in risk but I put my other associates in danger of being blamed for my bad judgment. As Buffy’s destiny was chosen for her to become a slayer, I was selected out of many people to work for the company. The managers told me to sit out away from work and they would get people to cover my assignment, and so I did.
Buffy has realized that she is the chosen one for her destiny to become a vampire slayer and that no one else can do her job. She knows what her duties are and she has to enforce them and give up several things that are valuable to her. She has to give up her normal lifestyle and the one she loves. As I realized my decisions were wrong I decided to make it right. I risked myself being injured even more to finish my assignment because I knew I was wrong and the company was short a few workers and at risk to lose money and sales. Buffy enforces her decisions by sacrificing her love Angel, acting more maturely, thinking about what she is going to do more rationally, and learning to be more independent. Even though she might be scared and worried about the future, and deep down she knows that everything is going to be fine if she just takes the time to think things thoroughly. After realizing I was wrong I finished my assignment and the company was back on schedule. As I created the risk, I suffered the consequences and got injured and besides that injury the managers reviewed the incident through the surveillance cameras. A week later I received a call from my managers and was told I can no longer work at that Wal-Mart or any other. At that moment I knew I was wrong and had to fix that problem.
Buffy has to face many ethical dilemmas in her life as a slayer in Sunnydale. She has found herself asking ethical questions such as I and other people have. Similarly to Buffy we are faced with questions in our daily lives. The way people decide rather right and wrong is what they have to risk. In the episode “Becoming,” Buffy had to realize what the problems were that she had to face and analyze what the situation was to help the city of Sunnydale. As for me, I had to realize what I had to face and risk. In the end, Buffy enforced her decisions to pursue her destiny as a slayer just as I had to finish my assignment to benefit the company sales.
