When you think about humanities you think about the word human. There are many types of definitions for art, but I in this writing I will be putting more than one definition to make sure that I am getting all the aspects of art. I will be discussing how artist incorporate their culture and values into their artwork. Humanities are academic disciplines which study the human condition, using methods that are primarily analytic, critical, or speculative, as distinguished from the mainly empirical approaches of the natural and social sciences. Culture is a way of thinking and living established by a group of people and transmitted from one generation to the next. Culture is broken down into arts, writings, customs, and intellectual pursuits. It is involved in the arts because looking at group arts you can tell they are all from the same culture by the pictures that they create. It is involved in writing because every culture has their own form of writing, and it establishes themselves from other cultures. Customs are involved in culture because every culture has a way of doing things and living their life. Intellectual pursuit is a component of culture because every culture has its focus on something some cultures focuses on survival and others focus on the brains they are always trying to learn something new. Art is the creation of significant things. Art does not have to be beautiful as long as it is meaningful than it can be considered art. Art can be painting or structures because it was created by someone it was not just place there. Architecture is from the Neolithic period and the objects are created from wood, plant material, or mud brick. The Neolithic period their structures were more religious. For example the cromlech which is a circle of stones that have a religious purpose. Another example would be Woman of Willendorf. The Sumerian cultured based their architecture on houses it was what they mostly built. The visual art mostly consisted of wall paintings, and the wall paintings are mostly consisted of their animal and people shooting at them. The music can only be speculated because there is no trace of music from the Egyptians. There were instrumentals and these went along with poems and they expressed sorrow, happiness, love, and peace. The instruments included harps and the group percussions. The types of literature include poems there is not too many poems that can be found they are scattered because they were written so long ago. An example of Egyptian literature is Hymn to the Sun. Artist expressed their values of their culture well especially in the sculpture Woman of Willendorf. They expressed fertility showing that the woman has big breast and the woman being big all over. For example they created cave painting in hopes of creating or bringing more cattle into the tribe. It also showed that the men liked big women because when food was scarce the women were still big it was called a physical beauty. The artwork that I decided to choose was Trinity with the Virgin, St. John the Evangelist, and Donors, Santa Maria Novella, Florence. I wanted to examine one particular piece of this artwork and that is Jesus on the cross. This can influence a culture and its values because it is showing how God sacrificed his only begotten son so that we can be forgiven of our sins. It shows us how much Jesus went through in order to forgive us of our sins and it influences us to do better and live better. In conclusion humanities study human behavior and nature. Culture is broken down into arts, writings, customs, and intellectual pursuits. Art does not have to be beautiful it just has to be meaningful. There are many different types of artwork. Artist can depict their cultures and values in their painting by expressing symbols and body language in their paintings.
