What Freedom Of Speech Means To Me.
With the possible exception of life and personal property, there is nothing more valuable and prized than freedom of speech of a person. Freedom of speech means: the freedom of one to say or write with words anything one wants and chooses to say. It is not a freedom to say only neutral things, which offend no one, it is not a freedom to say only loyal opinions and agree with authorities on everything they might do or say. The freedom of speech means freedom to say anything. Even if everybody else on the whole planet is offended by it and even if it contradicts all of the official beliefs and authority’s statements. It is a fundamental principle that provides people with the right to speak their thoughts in public. The freedom of press is the similar concept, but applied to press.
When one is speaking or writing – one is expressing her or his thoughts. So, any restriction of speech is a restriction of thought. And ability to think is one of the main and the most important aspects of existence of the humans. Such a thing should not be violated or restricted, because thinking is also a mean for a person to determine her or his behavior and also to determine the correct action to take in a certain situations. The thing is that when someone thinks about choices they make – one tends to dismiss thoughts of something they know is impossible. One won’t spend much time considering doing what one knows can not be done.
In other words - any restriction on what one may or may not say means there is no point in thinking about those things, about which one would otherwise want to speak, if that speech were not prohibited. Why one should think about something that can never be said' Thus, when speech is restricted, people know they cannot freely speak out their thoughts and so they stop to think about certain things and blindly follow the lead of the oppressive authorities, which is not always righteous and correct.
In short: there is no freedom to think, where there is no freedom to say what one thinks. In this way the prohibition of free speech is greater evil than the evil that violates personal property and even greater than the evil that would violate person’s physical well-being. The evil that prohibits free speech abuses and terrorizing thinking process of a person and destroys the mind and free will. Those people, who claim to threaten our property, are just pure nothing compared to those authorities who threaten our consciousness and seize to control it. Therefore when freedom of speech is denied - other remaining freedoms and rights will soon be denied and lost as well. The sad fact is that no one will notice, because no one will think about defending.
And thus without [pic]freedom of speech the democracy can not exist. [pic]Freedom of speech helps a democratic society to improve and ensures that it can find solutions to different problems much more easily and effectively, it lets the new thoughts, ideas, and [pic]opinions to be brought in for people to think about and finally it provides all members of the society with the opportunity to express their [pic]thoughts and opinions without fear of severe punishment, just for being innovative or different.
Besides, freedom of speech is brand of [pic]democracy, because [pic]democracy in it’s essence is based on independent thoughts of people. In a [pic]democratic society people should always be allowed to express their views freely and without restrictions. Likewise is mentioned above - there will be no [pic]democracy if [pic]freedom of speech isn't granted to people. “Where [pic]freedom of speech is present thoughts are made available by the members of the society through free dialogues, discussions and debates.” Thus, the right of [pic]freedom of speech is a necessary factor for creating a healthy and democratic society in which justice will prosper.
Other benefits of freedom of speech are numerous. For example, the aspect of temper regulation. The people are content, because they feel free to express themselves and when they get angry, they can use the freedom of speech and press as to show that and to get the help of the government. That way the people can show authorities, that something is going wrong and they want a change and so the possible violence can be prevented.
Moreover [pic]freedom of speech is good not only because it is useful and appears to be a feature of [pic]democracy. In a [pic]democratic society people should be allowed to express their views freely and peacefully. If there is no [pic]freedom of speech, then there will be no [pic]democracy. Where there is [pic]freedom of speech, there new thoughts, ideas, and opinions are made available to everyone. Thus, the right of [pic]freedom of speech is a necessary condition for creating a functional and [pic]effective society in which, people are able to solve their problems and form the world around them in a fair and correct manner.
To me, having the right of freedom of speech means that I can voice my opinion wherever and whenever I feel appropriate to do so without the fear of being punished. Any country would be in a very poor condition if citizens would not have the right to freedom of speech. Without freedom of speech in the Bill of Rights of countries with democratic values, people would not stand up for what they believe in. In fact, they would be afraid to do so, because of the negative consequences they might trigger. I think that if a person has a valid point or even an unvalid point that they want to make known to voice or public - nothing should stand in their path. If there is some kind of filter or obstacle then it is clear that the fundamental right of this person to be a free individual is being abused and it is absolutely wrong.
