1. Introduction
The selection process for primary students wishing to join secondary schools is manual and time consuming for head-teachers given the ever growing numbers of pupils.
2.0 Background to the Problem
For some time now, student selection for senior one has been manually done based on the choices they make.
After the release of the examination results, Head teachers from the schools that the pupils anticipate to join are later called upon to do pupil selection based on the school’s criteria. Head teachers are provided with the list of pupils who applied to the respective schools and check for students who meet their selection criteria.
This project will provide an efficient web-based solution to the existing manual selection process which has proven to be resource wasting.
With this solution, records and relevant information related to pupils and the school for their choices will be done by a central computerized system.
3.0 Problem Statement
The current process of selecting senior one students is time-consuming and yet must be undertaken within seven days. The lengthy process of selecting senior one students poses a challenge of ensuring that not any one applicant who meets all the necessary requirements misses an opportunity to join their school preference.
As a result of the challenges mentioned above, there is need for an automated online student’s selection system that will enable Head Teachers quickly access relevant information online for selection.
4.0 Objectives
Main Objective
The main objective of the project is to develop a web-based system that will enable head teachers make ordinary level student selections quickly.
Specific Objectives
1. To identify system requirements of the new system by reviewing the current system.
2. To design the system.
3. To implement the system.
4. To test and validate the system.
5.0 Methodology
There are several approaches to data collection for designing and implementing the proposed online senior one student selection system, the following are some of ones discussed.
5.1 identify System Requirements
Interviews
This data collection method may be used to get views of how head teachers find the system and how it can be improved. The face to face interaction with the client avails first hand information.
Questionnaires
This will be used to collect data about the views of the head teachers concerning the system. This will help in modifying how the system will work to suite there needs. Since it is a national system every other detail that was not included can be got from these views and ideas.
5.2 Design
At this stage, there is designing the database, setting up tables their attributes ,keys , page layouts and how the system will look like. This helps in laying down the structure for storage of information.
5.3 Implementation
The system will be implemented using design software such as dreamweaver, visual basic, MySql server, PHP, web browsers, HTML.
5.4 Testing and Validation
Testing is aimed at detecting any defects in the system, debugging and location errors to be fixed so that the system meets the required needs for the user.
6.0 Outcomes
• All pupils’ results will be collected in one database and can easily be entered and accessed by different users depending on the rights and views
• The search and retrieval of all records will be simplified by just a click.
• Clerical time required to input information into the system will be less than half of that required to manually file and retrieve folders of information
• The system will ensure that information and records are not lost or misfiled
• The system will guard against losing or misplacing information
• Enhanced security levels to protect information from unauthorized users will be provided
• The burden of paper storage will be eliminated and/or reduced in certain cases
