Canada - Buoyant in Blue Gold
It’s a habitat for millions of different organisms and living creatures. It’s life’s most basic commodity. It’s a necessity to live. It’s required to exist. Water. If water is so important to humanity then why do countries find it necessary to waste so much of it' Canada has been graced with the global opportunity to possess more than “20 percent of the earth’s fresh water” (Morrison, 460) although it is rapidly decreasing. Countries waste the precious resource and damage their landscapes in the process. Canada has to deal with our own water-saving issues and battle with global warming as well as constantly being pressured by other countries to sell and share our water. Canada should instead should be focusing on the fact that by getting involved in what seems like a peaceful and selfless plan, we are in turn putting ourselves and our future generation’s lives at stake.
The Great Lake’s water supply is extremely vast but unfortunately only a very small portion of it is renewed annually from precipitation. The Great Lakes have an abundance of this element and countries are climbing over each other hoping to buy a little bit of life from Canada. Is it odd to anyone else that this is what our world is' Other countries waste their water every single day. They are careless and negligent about how they’re using water. Letting the bathroom tap run while they’re brushing their teeth, having automatic sprinkler’s on even when it’s raining outside because they’re too lazy to make the effort to conserve the resource. Then they come begging Canada for some water because we have so much of this “liquid wealth” (Morrison 462). Maybe if other countries weren’t so reckless and had cherished and taken care of their water sources they had to begin with, then they wouldn’t find it necessary to continually badger our country to be nice and share and “grow up” (Morrison 462). The topic of Canada selling water as an export is a disgrace. Selling something that was freely presented to us is wrong. If a country chooses to waste their water then they shouldn’t be given a second chance to replenish their assets. By selling water, it opens the flood gates to an unstoppable flow of take from all over the world. If you can’t buy life, then why should you be able to buy water. Aren’t they the same thing'
Global population in growing more and more each year, and we’re not just talking about humans. We’re talking about plants, organisms and animals. They’re one of the last things thought about because people constantly put themselves first. Well guess what, they know what suffering feels like because they understand the depleting water levels by having it thrown in their face every day. Many Canadian ecosystems rely on our lakes and rivers. We’re world renowned for our plentiful plants and our abundance of wildlife. It’s home to many different wild animals that are endangered such as the leatherback turtle, Acadian whitefish, whooping crane, and the tiger salamander. These animals rely on the importance of water and feel the effects of its dissipating levels. Many rivers and streams in Alberta and Western Canada are fed by glaciers. With the effects that global warming causes, these glaciers will soon melt and these rivers will vanish like they never existed. This will mean that Canada will be desperate for water at that point. This just proves that Canada doesn’t have water to spare now or in the future.
Putting aside the fact that other countries have been careless about the amounts of water they possess and have put their ecosystems at risk, they have damaged the physical appearance and beauty of their land. They’re trying to put in desalination plants because of their “benchmark price” (Morrison 461). The United States are still learning their economic lessons along the West and trying to repair the multitude of environmental disasters that have occurred because of the construction of reservoirs, canals and dams. Countries shouldn’t be given the choice to ignore the decisions they’ve made about water and just start over by sharing with Canada. They’ve created these shortages based on their own blatant ignorance. Why should we suffer when we’ve been making smart, resourceful and responsible decisions about the situation. If other countries hadn’t been so “gung-ho” about building structures and companies left, right, and center to help better their lack of water, then maybe they wouldn’t be begging Canada and trying to scrounge any little bit of water they can from us. In fact, a good question that Canadians should ask themselves, “If they’ve made those impulse and rash decisions before that made them waste water, wouldn’t they most likely do the same thing over again sooner or later'”. Canada, we’re shooting ourselves in the foot if we start selling water and sharing it with others all over the world. We’re known as a peace-keeping country but honestly I think we need to start putting ourselves first and thinking about what will benefit us in the long run. Canada can step down from being the responsible big brother to all the other countries over the world.
Canada’s abundance of water is vital to each and every one of its residents. It’s shouldn’t be sold, or carelessly diminished by wasteful individuals in countries all over the world. The severity of the situation shouldn’t be ignored or made minimal by anyone. Canada is a smart country who has thought about their decisions before they have acted on them and personally I think we all deserve a pat on the back. We’re seeing the benefits from our choices and it’s giving us the ability to prepare ourselves for the future. Canada has taken the smart route to providing their habitants with a safe amount of water to ensure a comfortable and easy lifestyle. Our decisions have given us environmentally rich ecosystems and have protected the expanding population of some of the increasing effects of global warming. If the sale of water in Canada is approved to other countries, then they will rapidly and wildly consume one of Canada’s cherished and sacred resources and in turn will neglect their own problems. How about instead of brushing their mass of environmental catastrophes under the carpet every time something goes wrong, and then running to their friendly and nicest Northern country, they turn around and face the consequences of their actions.
