PART 1: Breaking down your research question/topic
How would human consumption have effects on water resources in US'
In order to begin constructing effective searches using Boolean Operators, you’ll need to break down your topic and brainstorm some search terms, or keywords, to build your searches with. Write the main ideas or concepts of your research question/topic here: * Human behavior ,* water, effects, United State
_
PART 2: Brainstorming Search Terms (Keywords)
Now that you’ve identified the main ideas and concepts of your research question/topic, brainstorm additional search terms for those ideas so you can search catalogs and databases more effectively.
For example:
*Brainstorm and write your keywords for each main idea or concept* in the boxes* below*(refer back to 2a on page one for your main ideas). Feel free to use a thesaurus or talk with other people if that helps you think of additional keywords.
(Don’t worry if you don’t have a total of four main ideas…only use the boxes above you need)
PART 3: Building Keyword Boolean Searches
Now that you have many search terms to use, construct a couple of Boolean searches to try in the databases you were shown in class.
Construct searches using the keywords you feel best describe each main idea of your topic
Use the Boolean Operators AND, OR, ( ), *, ', and “ ” like we’ve done in the examples below:
Search #1: “Compan” AND “e-waste” AND “recycl”
*Write your searches* here: Search #1: “water shortage” AND “population growth”
Search #2: “water scarcity”
PART 4: Performing your Boolean Searches
English 102 web guide: http://libguides.uwb.edu/ENG102pouliot
(try starting with Expanded Academic Index or Academic Search Complete).
Record the following information from the sources you think are most useful for your topic. Recording this information will allow you to find the articles again should you decide to read and use them for your research:
Source #1:
Database: EBSCOhost
Search you entered: “water shortage” AND “population growth”
Article Title: “California’s 30-year drought”
Year of publication: 2009
List some new search terms/keywords you got from this source (HINT: examine words from the title, abstract, or full text of the article)
Drought, water efficiency, economic aspects
How does the information in this source relate to your research question/topic' I think that the information in this source is highly relevant to my research topic and I will totally use this article for my research paper.
Source #2:
Database: University Library
Search you entered: “water scarcity”
Article Title: “water scarcity and the role of storage in development”
Author(s): Keller Andrew, A
Source (Journal/Magazine/Newspaper title): International Water Management Institute
Year of publication: 2000
List some new search terms/keywords you got from this source (HINT: examine words from the title, abstract, or full text of the article):
Water scarcity, water storage
How does the information in this source relate to your research question/topic'
I haven’t read the whole article but I think that this article will be really helpful for my research paper because in general, it discusses about how to manage the water resources in developing countries
OVER
*PART 5*: Reflection*– Why am I doing this'' *
In the space below, briefly respond to the following questions: What kind of results did your search strings produce' Were they relevant to your topic' Were they useful for your research' How'
What differences between each set of search results did you notice' Did one search seem more effective than the other' Did one produce more relevant results for your research topic' Why'
Why were the results of each of your searches different'
In what ways did you/might you modify your searches to produce better results next time'
*At first, when I tried to search with :*“human behavior” AND water on the University Library but there were no results coming up. However, I tried to use the same search on *EBSCOhost* and there were lots of results coming up.
On second search, I find another key word to search on university library website and this time I got 109 results.
*I have spent much time working on searching for articles and sources. I try to change key words and the order of those key words. For example, when I try to search with “water supply” AND “human consumption”, no results came up but then I tried to put “*water supply” AND consumers , there were 3 results.
PART 6*: *Feedback – What did you learn'
In the space below, please briefly respond to the following questions:
What did you learn from the library workshop and this worksheet' What was new to you' What was most helpful for you and your research'
What still remains unclear to you regarding Boolean searching, narrowing your topic, the library catalog and/or the databases, or any other area of library research'
*After going through the whole thing, I think I get used to these ample sources of information. Everytime* I tried to search with different key words, I get a better and clearer idea of what my research question is going to change.
After hours spending time with all these websites, I am now getting closer to what I really want to write on my research paper. For now, I think that I am going to write about how human consumption affects on water resource and what to do to protect and prevent water scarcity.
*I think that* topic is still going to change as I keep working on searching and it depends so much on what I can find and how much I can find.
