A very good afternoon to the honourable adjudicators, chairperson and timekeeper.
As the saying goes, if it’s not broken, why fix it' And so our stand is that students SHOULD NOT vote for their school head prefect because the existing system is by far much better.
(rebutt)
Popularity
I am convinced that when students vote for a head prefect, the whole process would degenerate into a popularity contest.
A school head prefect is an icon of the school; someone all the other students can look up to as a shining example. An icon should be chosen on the personal qualities of the best candidate and not the popularity of any candidate.
An election will be abused. The popularity* of the candidates** and **not *their *capabilit*ies is used to determine the winner of the election. It will be a disaster if this happens.
Students tend to vote for the *most popular or cutest* student in school. The best candidate to do the job will not be chosen. The whole election then becomes a farce.
Logically, students *should never vot*e for their school head prefect otherwise the noble objectives of having a school head prefect will be defeated badly.
“Popularity is not an indication of quality” according to a famous quote .
It is such a shame and grossly unfair that when the vote is based on popularity rather than quality, students that do have the potential will not be given the chance to shine.
School head prefect (SHP). SHP can stand for Special Honourable Person. The students and the whole school need such a special person to represent the school. Sadly, there is no guarantee that students can vote in such a person to represent them. This is because a person voted in as school head prefect will probably not have the special honourable qualities to be an excellent school head prefect since popularity and capability is used as the criteria.
A school does not consist of its students only.
A school consists of the headmistress, students, teachers and other staff. Therefore, it is indeed very unwise and even foolish to select the school head prefect through a popular vote amongst the students and ignore the wisdom and good judgement of the HM and the teachers.
The headmistress and the teachers must have a say on the choice of who should be the school head prefect. They are our mentors, our educators, our guides to our future. We trust them to select the most suitable person to be the school head prefect. They know who is suitable and who is not. They are the best judge to find a person who has special qualities of maturity, intelligence, leadership and commitment to serve. Without any doubt, they can select the right candidate and guide this chosen candidate in the best way to lead the school forward.
It is too early for students to understand the whole process of an election. Politics is part of a democracy but politicking is bad.
The right candidate has to be chosen as this person not only represents the students of the school but the entire image of the school itself to the whole community and to the country,
Attitudes, Peer Pressure & Intimidation
Students do not know to vote for the best candidate.
Students’ attitudes and peer pressure influence voting decisions.
Peer pressure causes students to vote accordingly to how they think others wish them to vote and they tend to be strongly inclined to satisfy the wishes of those who pressured them. Due to this, a candidate who is not necessarily the better candidate for head prefect will be foolishly chosen.
*Student voter*s will be intimidated to vote a certain candidate. Intimidation is wrong.
Students are threatened to vote for certain candidates, otherwise they will be harmed.
Brave students who ignore instructions to vote for a candidate whom they do not believe in can be traced and harmed. A culture of fear will grip the students.
