May 23rd 1347 Dear Vladik Shadowmere, Lance Picard once again just saying hello and responding to the recent letter I received back from you. My manor has been greatly affected by the plague. Many serfs are dying and there are not too many people in the village of Sussex. Hopefully I will be able to stay away from that horrid virus. May 23rd 1347 Dear Journal, That Vladik Shadowmere is a very nice vassal but I am growing suspicious that he needs help, I don’t know whether he needs help for a family member with plague or a friend. But my guess is that he expects me to help him and I will be very disappointed if I have to be the one to tell him I cannot help him. This plague has had a huge effect on all of Europe. The plague is more effective when it attacks weakened people and domestic animals used for production of food, so Europe at this time is already weakened by exhaustion of the soil due to poor farming because the feudal system was not inspired yet was at great risk of decree. This also put a huge slow to the trade in Europe as farms became more deserted. Trade was a big part of how this crisis started in Europe because traders and merchants met with people from Asia (where the plague originated) got the disease and came back to Europe and spread it. That’s why it was so uprising in Europe not because of the crusades or hundred years war. May 26th 1347 Dear Vladik Shadowmere, I recently got your letter about how you feel very anxious to help your brother who has the plague. I know you must feel very bad to ask me this question putting all this weight on my shoulders and yes it is stressful but the only thing I can say to you is to go to a priest and have him bless you, for his sins will be forgiven and possibly lessen the affects of the virus. P.S. I am very sorry June 2nd 1347 Dear Journal, I have not written an entry since May 23rd that is because I have been very busy lately. I feel as though I am getting ill. But nothing to worry about no lumps or plague symptoms. I went to the doctor which was a waste of my time because he didn’t know much and didn’t give me any medicine he just said you are fine be sure to drink water and keep good hygiene. The Bubonic Plague has already killed 25 million people, one third of Europe's population mostly adults and young adults as it is very contagious and there are no cures. Some symptoms are vomiting, giddiness, headaches, shivering, tongue turns white, and intolerance to light. Some of the later symptoms are pains in the joints, breaking blood vessels, internal bleeding, and your skin turns black as a result of dried blood from internal bleeding, and I have none of these symptoms so I have reason to believe I do not have it. June 5th 1347 Dear Journal, I am experiencing some weird things happening to my body near my arms and on my face, just all over. I think I might have plague I am almost positive that it is the Black Death but I must accept my fate for I have sinned. It must have been the time I sentenced that man to death because I disliked him and accused him of stealing from me on the manor. Cities are crumbling under this pressure from the plague such as religious groups. The Christians are starting to blame different groups such as Jews and foreigners for this crisis. The plague is also affecting the royal Christian church because the Christians are praying devoutly for the plague to disappear and for the health of their loved ones and the prayers are not being answered so the people are mad. June 6th 1347 Dear Journal, I am very sad today because of this virus it has made me a complete outsider no one wants anything to do with me because I am infected. I now have three large bumps under my arms and they are hideous. And I am lying in my bed with a league of doctor on hand. The government has lost ordinance completely, poverty, disease and hunger, along with everyday problems were hurled into the laps of the government officials so they had a plate full of work so they were slow on solutions for this plague. June 10th 1347 Dear Journal, I am still just laying here and the doctor says I am soon to be deceased. His estimate is four hours and I will be dead. So I am making this last entry that is completing Lance Picard’s life as a lord during the middle ages.
