Talanda Mccarley HU300-23 Art and Humanities Unit 9 Final Project Virtual Time Capsule 02/11/2012 February 11, 2011 Dear Sir or Madam from the future; I hope that this letter finds you well and in high spirits; if you have found this time capsule then times have certainly changed; it is my duty to enlighten you on a few things that society has found to be important and to also give you an idea of what life was like in 2012. At this point of time people are very conscious about their health, religion and finances. At present I work at one of the most worldwide retail store that has ever existed, my job title is department manager in the jewelry department, this is certainly not my career choice that’s why I’m in the process of furthering my education to make a better life for my kids and I . 2012 holds very uncertain times and I sincerely hope that this letter will be read ion a more positive light, many countries especially in the Middle East are fighting over oil and gas. Cars in 2012 use a lot of both and so much of the economy is bound to these unsustainable natural resources. I truly hope that this letter and time capsule have found you in a much better and more peaceful time and that the mistakes we in the past have made have not resulted in disastrous conseqnces, if they have then I do apologize and hope that you will learn from our triumphs and mistakes so that life on earth will be better for future generations to come. Morality and Decision Making In the year 2012 people take care of each other as much as possible; and we do this through charitable actions. For example, when a natural disaster like an earth quake or hurricane strikes, people come together to provide supplies, emotional support, and medical attention to those in need. We also work together to rebuild the areas that have been hit. Rather than expect others to fend for themselves or live in unsafe conditions, we believe that we are an international community who must assist others in rebuilding their lives. Even though there is a lot of war, famine, crime, we still believe that people are good and the decision to help others, in spite of the horrors that go on, is a decision that must be made. For in helping others, we ultimately help ourselves as well. Happiness Happiness to me can be defined as a state of contentment from experiencing life’s simple pleasures, as people we get so caught up in things that we tend to forget the little simple things in life, we should learn how to appreciate the little things and try not to stress over what we can’t change. Tiya: A Parrot's Journey Home Written by son of rambow on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 Tiya: A Parrot's Journey Home is this little-known book that I picked up as a last-minute purchase at my favorite bookstore. I am a sucker for Alchemist type of books. Tiya sounded so similar to the Alchemist in its premise. Samarpan or Swami Samarpananda as he is better known is a monk. And Paulo Coelho isn't. Therein lays the difference. While the Alchemist was also a fable much like Tiya is, what differentiates Tiya is the veneration of spirituality that surrounds it. Tiya is deeply metaphysical, its spirituality rooted in language simple yet so complex in its simplicity. Tiya is a parrot, not just another parrot, but one who thinks he is different. Haven't we all' He befriends a beautiful swan, Hans, (an unknown presence) who tells him there is more to him than ever will be, and urges him to seek himself. “You are much more than what you think you are, and you can achieve much more than you are achieving now.” Tiya sets off on a journey, a voyage of self-discovery to fantastical lands where he meets various creatures, equally fantastical. Through his interactions with them, Tiya learns to identify his own strengths and weaknesses, disseminate his ego, and understand his self. If only I can take such a journey, and find such beautiful revelations to myself! But the path wasn't easy - many times, Tiya almost came to close to losing his life. Yet he emerges - soul singed but freer for it. Harper Collins, it appears, has not done much to promote the book. I can scarce find an Internet source credible enough apart from Samarpan' own blog. Looking back now, I wish I had read the book a little slower. Yet, there were certain allegorical descriptions that were a bit too difficult for my simple mind to fathom. There is no doubt that Samarpan has weaved in years of his Vedantic learning into creating this charming book and that effort needs to be lauded. Perhaps my cluttered mind too needs to fly, just like Tiya. Maybe then, I might really believe I am more than what I think I am which not much is anyway. Erechtheum - temple from the middle classical period of Greek art and architecture, built on the Acropolis of Athens between 421 and 405BC. The Erechtheum contained sanctuaries to Athena Polias, Poseidon, and Erechtheus. The requirements of the several shrines and the location upon a sloping site produced an unusual plan. From the body of the building porticoes project on east, north, and south sides. The eastern portico, hexastyle Ionic, gave access to the shrine of Athena, which was separated by a partition from the western cella. The northern portico, tetrastyle Ionic, stands at a lower level and gives access to the western cella through a fine doorway. The southern portico, known as the Porch of the Caryatids (see caryatid) from the six sculptured draped female figures that support its entablature, is the temple's most striking feature; it forms a gallery or tribune. The west end of the building, with windows and engaged Ionic columns, is a modification of the original, built by the Romans when they restored the building. One of the east columns and one of the caryatids were removed to London by Lord Elgin, replicas being installed in their places. Songs of Freedom SONGS OF FREEDOM: THE MUSIC OF BOB MARLEY AS TRANSFORMATIVE EDUCATION W. Alan Smith, Ph.D. Florida Southern College, Lakeland, FL Open your eyes and look within are you satisfied with the life you're living' We know where we're going; we know where we're from we’re leaving Babylon; we're going to our fatherland. Bob Marley, "Exodus", 1977 The music of Robert Nesta Marley, the late Jamaican musician who introduced both reggae music and Rastafarian religious beliefs to an international audience, combines a "feel good," slow-paced rhythm with a militant call for justice and freedom from oppression. Born in the lush countryside of Jamaica, he moved at a young age to the crushing squalor of Trench Town, one of Kingston, Jamaica's most hopeless "government yards" where he, like other "Rude Boys" abandoned formal education for the promise of the street gangs, only to discover music as his way out of life among the "sufferahs." Raiders of the Lost Ark The perfect action movie, Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of those pop masterpieces that transcend its superficiality. A collection of Sunday serials and ’40s pulp comic books, the movie works because it knows exactly what it wants to be and succeeds at this brilliantly. Everyone knows the story of Indiana Jones, the rough and tumble archeologist who always manages to escape the bad guys and booby traps, steal the prize, and get the girl. There’s nothing new in this formula, but in the way director Spielberg, producer George Lucas, and screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan manage to simultaneously make the story believable and fanciful, Raiders always walks the line between reality and our imaginations. No other action movie can thrill again and again like this one. There are so many breathtaking scenes of action and stunt work that the movie almost feels like a workout. Who can forget the great opening, the gunfight in Tibet, the car chase, or Indy’s face-off with the man with the scimitar' Raiders creates a vivid and lucid world for the viewers, drawing them in through the movie’s style and grace. How seductive is this movie' After seeing the trilogy on video when I was seven, I spent the next six years convinced I wanted to be an archeologist. Raiders don’t make any groundbreaking meditations on human life—it celebrates it, showing us who we are and what we love. You can’t ask for much more than that. Chatty Cathy Dolls Mattel was well-known for their talking toys and doll in the 1960s, and Chatty Cathy was the doll that started it all for them. Although there had been attempts at "talking" dolls for 60 years (since the time of Jumeau's Bebe Phongraphe) Chatty Cathy was the first sure-fired talking doll hit. With her pull string talking mechanism and phrases such as "Please brush my hair," she captured the hearts of an entire generation of little girls.
