Research about Violent Video Games Abstract This critical analysis explores the relationship between playing violent video games and that of violent behavior. There have been many studies done that correlates a relationship between volatile behavior and the amount of time someone plays violent video games. Research about Violent Video Games In this article, the relationship between violent video games and violent (recent) behavior are being studied. The research for the article falls into three categories: short- term laboratory experiments; longer-term experiments (often based in schools); and correlation studies (between playing time and aggression (Carey, 2013). The author argues that the longer a person plays a violent video game such as “Call of Duty”, “Killzone 3” , or “Battlefield 3” stir the blood. In analyzing this article, the question arises of whether or not playing video games alone was the sole attribute to such aggressive behavior in recent crisis such as the Aurora theater shooting, the Columbine shooting, and other massacres. The target audience is everyone considering that is it trying to find the distinction between violent video game play and behavior. However, this type of study should really target psychologist/psychiatrist and parents trying to understand the influence on volatile behavior in juveniles. The study used experimental research in order to determine if the was a relationship between the behavior of individuals that played a violent video game versus ones that played a nonviolent video game. In the study, individuals that played a violent video game had much more aggression than the individuals that played the nonviolent video game for the same length of time (Carey, 2013). The data was collected from a group of 47 undergraduates playing violent and nonviolent video games for 15 minutes and then faced with both physical and psychological arousal (Carey, 2013). The study supports the fact that those that played the violent video game had far more aggressive behavior than the students that played the nonviolent video games. The study does not purport to solve a problem because others argue against the relationship. However, there are more studies that tend to be supportive of the fact that there is a direct relationship between the amount/frequency of play and affinity for violent games with that of criminal behavior (Iowa State University). A study published in an issue of Youth Violence and Juvenile Justice examined the level of video game exposure for 227 juvenile offenders in Pennsylvania. The results indicated that the frequency of play of the violent video games were strongly associated with the delinquent and violent behavior of the individuals in the study (Iowa State University). Although the study mentions that violent video game exposure is not the sole cause of violence, it does not mention other risk factors that influence this type of behavior and could those possible risk factors have been more influential in the study rather than the video game play.
