Planning, Organizing and leading an organization is effected by two broad categories of factors, the internal environment and the external environment. Organizations are open systems that are effected by, and then in turn effect, their external environments (Snell, 2009) The internal environment of an organization refers to the demographics of an organization, and internal documents which guide decision making. The dual environment in which Verizon Wireless functions will be examined in regard to how globalization, technology, innovation, diversity, and ethics effect its day to day operations. Internal and External Factors in Relation to Management Functions Management of an organization has four primary functions planning, organization, leading and controlling. Management requires juggling of human resources and organizational assets to achieve the goals of the company both effectively and with efficiency in mind. Planning activities include analyzing current situations, anticipating the future, determining objectives, deciding what activities the organization will engage in, choosing corporate and business strategies, and determining the resources needed to achieve the organizations goals(Snell, 2009) Organizing refers to assembling and coordination of physical, human, financial, informational and other resources to achieve goals which are set in the planning process. Both planning and organizing is of little use if a manager cannot effectively lead his people. Leading is the act of motivating and empowering people to achieve high performance. All three functions will not bring about the desired results without some form of monitoring. Controlling, the final function related to management, ensures that the company’s resources are being reflective of the organizational goals and quality and safety figures also reflect the organizational goals set forth.
