Verbatim Dialogue Transcript BSHS/322 October 4, 2010 Client: Good afternoon, Mr. Howard. Interviewer: I wanted to cover a few things during our meeting regarding time constraints and our confidentiality agreement. Um, uh our meetings will last about fifty minutes in length. With me today I have a confidentiality agreement that we need to discuss and um uh you will need to sign before the end of our meeting today. Brief silence.... Client: Mr. Howard can we talk about the confidentiality agreement I am not sure I know what you are talking about. Interviewer: Absolutely, generally I like to inform my clients that confidentiality remains sealed between the client and myself unless I feel that the client presents immediate danger to his or herself, me, the general public and children. This is to protect the client and everyone involved. Let me know if I need to be more specific, if not we can move forward with our interview. Client: No thanks, I understand the confidentiality agreement and I have not a problem signing the documents. Interviewer: Please feel comfortable, if you need anything to drink, we have refreshments behind the couch, feel free to help yourself. Well uh, um, I would like to start by learning some information about the reason you decided to visit with me this afternoon' Client: Uh, I, I have been having some difficulties lately. See uh, about seven years ago, um I got into some trouble with the laws and now these past troubles are causing problems in my hunt for a job. Interviewer: So, if I understand correctly, you ran into some trouble with the laws about seven years ago and now it is causing you problems locating a job' Client: Yeah, that's right. Interviewer: What type of trouble did you run into exactly' Client: Well see, it is a long story and kind of embarrassing, but um about seven years ago I received some stolen merchandise from a friend and uh, I got caught with the merchandise, so I was arrested by the police and uh went to jail. Interviewer: What type of charges were brought against you' Client: I severed about three years in state jail and I, I um was convicted of a felony for theft by receiving. You see Mrs. Rynders, now nobody wants to give me a job. Interviewer: This sounds like a difficult situation and one that creates stress for you Mr. Howard, uh, I was thinking, do you have a current resume to provide to prospective clients, Mr. Howard' Brief Silence again.... Client: Coughing...yeah I have a resume, but it don't look too good, there's not a whole lot of jobs on it, because I have a hard time getting a job. Interviewer: um, that is great that you have a resume, that will provide a building block for us to work on in our future meetings and um this will help to prepare you for a positive job search...um, how do you feel about that' Client: that, uh that sounds okay, but do, do you really think that we will be able to make a resume with little work history, uh, I'm uh, just worried about that. Interviewer: Mr. Howard, I do not see any reason why we cannot work with your current resume and um if possible, I would like you to bring it to our next meeting if possible, perhaps we can take a look at your resume and get you into some classes that help job seekers create resumes.... Okay, our five minutes ended there; however, I turned to tape back on for all of us to engage in a conversation regarding the feedback on the interview. Interviewer: Okay, observer what did you discover regarding any verbal and non-verbal communication that might have taken place' Observer: I could tell that both the client and the interviewer were nervous. There was some stuttering occurring in during the interview and some moments of silence. The non-verbal communication transpiring was the eye-contact made between the client and interviewer, there was facial expressions made during times, more so during the discussion regarding the resume than any other time during the interview. Interviewer: What did you observe about the clients comfort level in the initial moments of the interview' Observer: Uh, the interviewer did a pretty good job at putting the client at ease; however, I believe the interviewer was a little nervous and I feel the client could sense a tiny bit of that nervousness. Interviewer: Client, please indicate your satisfaction level of the interview' Client: I, uh, I think it went pretty good, I was nervous in the beginning, but once the talking started it, um, it wasn't too bad. Interviewer: If you could offer me any advice in interviewing clients in the future, what advice would you offer' Client: I'd say, just relax a little more, do not appear to be nervous, because the client can sense the display of nervousness. And, uh I think the confidentiality agreement should be filled out in the beginning of the session rather than, uh, at the end. Interviewer: Thank you both for participating in this interview with me, I appreciate it!
