It has been vilified as a threat to intelligence, and its viewers have been called voyeurs. But if reality television is really that bad, then why do we watch, and what could it mean for behavior' E. Jaffe (2005).
The values portrayed in popular media may be a factor in the moral decline of our society. The media’s mixed messages of sex, adultery, and lack of character does affect relationships and behavior. Reality show actors wanting their 15 minutes of fame will do almost anything including being filmed in very compromising positions. If you are 18 years and older you should have the right to watch whatever you would like. Reality –based television has more than one definition they can be unscripted, drama, and comedy and have actual events. The actors in these shows are ordinary people who have no acting skills. Many actors of these shows have been found from online auditions or talent search scouting. These are a series of shows that portray and sensationalize negative behavior and conflicts making these shows some of the most watched and successful. These shows are also lucrative for the actors who can command up to $ 300.000.00 per season to act on cue.
Reality TV shows have been around for a several decades with favorite shows likes The Dating Game and Candid Camera. There are several types of reality shows to choose from such as competing game shows, documentary, makeover, renovation or hidden camera to name a few. There is a show for all genres and there is a reality show for everyone which makes them more popular with a social impact that it has had on our society.
The values shown in these programs may not be the values and morals of everyone watching. Each person on these shows is different with their own set of values and morals. These people are human beings and the more outrageous the show is the higher chances are that the show will continue. These shows can have a profound effect on relationships are portrayed in these reality shows. Abigail Clancy best known for her TV and modeling work stated that “No marriage is perfect and the trials of being in the public eye.” E. Region (2012). Catfights are common and expected on the reality shows “Basketball Wives”, “Jersey Shore”, “The Real Housewives”, and the “Bad Girls Club”. This is the norm on some of the hit reality shows whether it’s acting for the camera or the actor’s true nature. The violence and the aggressiveness are so common that “viewers are desensitized” S. Goldberg (2012). Reality stars Kim Kardashian the star of her family show “Keeping up with the Kardashian’s.” Was briefly married to Chris Humphries for 72 days the two had only been dating for a few months when they had their beautiful lavish televised wedding. The now divorced Chris Humphries stated that “the wedding was fraudulent” C J. (2012).
Reality shows are not what always what they t appear. Several actors on these shows have gone through divorces, marriages, and adulterous affairs. Obsessed on having the perfect wedding for the cameras with lavish ceremonies actors are getting married for the cameras. From dating shows to Reality TV these relationships are unrealistic and only entertainment without a meaningful bond. “Sister Wives” is another reality show where 3 women are married to the same man. This family practices polygamy and has had to move because of their lifestyle that was exposed on their reality show. They have found it difficult to make a living after airing their dirty laundry on national TV. These shows are for entertainment purposes only and there are negative and positive Reality TV shows. Criticized for being staged and misleading and they are not to blame for the downward spiral of society. Reality is real and relationships are tested
