Values and Ethics go hand in hand. It is important to set high standards for yourself and your employees. Every company wants to ensure its success and in order to do so they must hire people with high moral values and Ethics. If we as individuals set our values and ethics high in life we will achieve our goals. In the next few paragraphs we will break down the meaning of Value and Ethics and explain the relationship among professional values, ethics and career success.
Professional Ethics are commonly known as moral principles or rules of conduct that each person must use in the business world. The professional values and ethics made by each company and its employees can often times have a global impact on the success of the company as well as the employee. (Citation). The business world is very detail orientated and follows certain aspects that an employee must acknowledge. In the workplace managers and supervisors should set the standard for using ethics by showing respect, being honest, and promoting trust.(Citation). The management has control over the form of communication used, and if the communication is unethical or comes from a source that doesn’t conform to the company’s ethics and values this may compromise the ability of the business. Most professional values and ethics can be reached outside the work place and extend into an employee’s personal life. The company regards its employees in many cases as an extension or representative of the company at all times whether the employee is working or not. For example, if you happen to engage in a specific activity that could make the company look bad then hiring you, is seen as a failure. The company depends on its employees for the survival of their company. Companies do not hire people they feel will make them undesirable and in a bad light. (Citation).
Allowing employees to be rewarded for using professional ethics gives them a feeling of self-worth, which in turn allows them to feel as if they are trusted by management. Keeping within the guidelines that each company sets forth when they hire each employee can contribute directly to the success they can achieve while at the company and long after they leave. When the values and ethics of the company are adhered to, the company views the employee as someone who is loyal and can be trusted with sensitive information (Citation). Communication in the workplace also allows the employee to feel as though their ideas or creativity can be used. Give credit where credit is due. Being a professional doesn't mean having all the answers or knowing the best decision in any given situation. Sometimes being professional is knowing how to choose the best person or where find the best answer, and if that comes from someone else, give them credit. One of the keys to having what you want in life is helping others get what they want, and that includes giving them respect and recognition.(citation). Implementing the ideas of employees helps to motivate as well as contribute to the company. If management takes the ideas, and recognizes that working as a team allows success, they carry additional leverage and authority with positive reinforcement.
In conclusion personal and professional values are defined as a person’s decision making processes. Professional ethics is defined as an individual’s moral principles. Ethics are values molded within a person’s belief system. It is the road map to how people view themselves and others in society. Honesty, integrity, and generosity are the key elements that companies look for when hiring employees to represent them. “Universal values are “first do no harm keep it simple. ‘And honesty is the best policy. Jane Smith (2008). Career success must be planned, mapped, and thought about before taking any steps toward success. Values are rules, Morals are how we judge others and Ethnics are professional standard. "Clients always seek businesses with the same values and ethnics similar to their goals, and career choices." (D. Davis ). Acting the part of a professional, no matter what profession you're in or trying to be a part of, is largely a matter of self-discipline (citation).Companies’ are looking for employees that show dedication and self worth. In corporate America companies largely employ individuals who they feel represent the ideals and or mission of the company.
