Professional Values and Ethics Mark A. Ramirez GEN/200 FOUNDATIONS FOR GENERAL EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS February 26, 2010 Christopher Page In the United States, where society is a melting pot, often time’s values and ethics of individuals are over-looked. From the janitor to the Company Chief Executive Officer, individuals must strive to go above and beyond to succeed in their chosen profession. To achieve this success, values must balance with ethics. To become a professional success story in any career these must be put into practice. Values and ethics are at the core in any productive society. Values are beliefs important to or valued by an individual or someone. Some examples of values are integrity, selfless service, professionalism, honesty, duty, commitment, teamwork, and loyalty. These values are important to one’s personal beliefs and society ideals and customs. When these values are at the center of daily living success will be achieved. The lacks of values will breakdown any society or organization. The definition of ethics according to Webster dictionary is “A system of principles governing morality and acceptable conduct.” In determining and deciding what is right and what is wrong is creates an ethical dilemma. Ethical behavior is behavior that is appropriate. It founded on the principle of morals. Ethical behavior is the right way to behave. It is consistent with a structure system of principles that governs a group or self. Some key examples of ethics are accountability, confidentiality, integrity, honesty. The practice of ethical behavior brings forth success and a productive environment in the workplace. We can find sources of professional values and ethics in government laws and regulations, state licensing boards, and trade associations; however it all starts with a proper upbringing; therefore parents will have the greatest influence on how children behave and become a productive citizen. Teachers, neighbors, friends or coaches are another source and can impact a great deal in molding a person to become a productive citizen. How much time and surrounding will play a great deal in life and can have a positive or negative influence. The root values and ethics come from personal integrity. In the workforce, professional integrity includes completing all assign tasks, being on time, responsibility, proper dress code. On the other hand, academic integrity is a fundamental value upon which colleges and universities are founded. All students, faculty and staff are expected to abide by these principles. According to the Center for Academic Integrity there are five fundamental values that characterize an academic community of integrity: “Honesty, Trust, Fairness, Respect, and Responsibility. Simply put possessing good values as well as ethics we will bring advancement opportunities such as respect, promotions, and career success Professional ethics is the bar that is set forth by the employer in the workplace. The Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League is a perfect example. The Colts in outlined several values and ethic for to each member of the team to reach success. In 2007, Tony Dungy coach the team and won the Super Bowl. Payton Manning, the starting quarterback has won the “Most Valuable Player” award four times. They led by example and worked hard as a team to achieve this success. Basic standards or ethics are not met by the players values success will not be achieved. Legal example The blueprint to success in any chosen profession starts with possessing professional values and ethic. This is no secret and can be seen daily all around the United States in all we do. Powered with this knowledge there is no excuses if succeed is not achieved. It takes hard work and is a lifetime process. One day we can pass this on and build a better world. References
