Sexuality and Value Systems
An individual’s view toward his or her sexuality is based on a variation of factors, which may include personal beliefs, religion, moral values, or the belief that one should satisfy their urges as long as it makes him or her happy. Each person is entitled to his or her beliefs, and these beliefs and choices are eventually made according to the moral values of what is right and wrong toward sexuality.
Ethical Relativism
The value systems that I relate to are ethical relativism and rationalist. Ethical relativism base its values of sexuality according to human existence, which essential means completing acts according to what each individual believes is right or wrong to complete (Rathus, Nevid, & Fichner-Rathus, 2005). Throughout my life I have always believed that sexuality is a choice made by an individual when determining what works for his or her current situation. Humans were placed in this world to multiply and fulfill certain desires, and I believe no person can really determine what values should be placed on society when dealing with sexuality. I gave birth to four children by the time I was 22 years old and even though some consider this to be too young it worked best for me at that particular time because I was a responsible person who could care for my children, work, and go to school. On the other hand, this may be a bad choice for another individual because of his or her circumstances and outlook of responsibility. So ethical relativism is a value that lets humans determine their own circumstances and choices when determining if they want children early, or want to wait until marriage before engaging in sexual activity, nonetheless, the choice is theirs.
Rationalist
Even though I believe in freedom of choice to sexuality, I also believe in being a rationalist by assessing the situation and weighing the pros and cons to my actions. If a situation does not work in my best interest then I will not tolerate it and I will move forward. My choices are based upon my happiness and not dealing with circumstances because it would make others happy. Being a rationalist is based on looking at certain situations and using intelligence to determine the course of action (Rathus, Nevid, & Fichner-Rathus, 2005). When an individual make choices about sexuality according to religion, societal views, or the happiness of others he or she cannot fulfill their freedom to choose what works for his or her life situations.
Ethical relativism and rationalist allows an individual the freedom of choice because each person in this world is different, and each person has different beliefs to how they move forward toward their sexuality. As I have always believed, it is each individual choice when choosing what is right or wrong to how sexuality should be handled in his or her life.
